I've got a torpedo type heater right now that heats the shop fine, but the noise drives me crazy. How loud is this type of heater?

Eh, I can't hear you, I have my top hat heater (basically identical to the image you posted) on...

Very loud (IMHO), the 'rush' of the burning gas is more than one might expect. Imagine a 1000 blow torches all on at the same time!

Good side: dang things put out a lot of heat!
Bad side: They stink big time, and **** the oxygen from the building.
Good side: never ever measured any CO from mine.
Bad side: the stink is so bad that I am replacing it with a proper heater (150 K BTU one.)

For the price that heater can't be beat, but it does have some major down sides. I doubt it will be less noisy than your torpedo heater.

I had one of those, good for small space heat, it was loud and stinky I got rid of the thing.

Side note: I'm currently finishing the inside of a 2 story 32 x 48 x 12 dettached garage, I'm using a 225K -375K BTU propane fired torpedo heater. I have it set on the lowest setting and wired a line voltage stat to the power cord. It hasn't been running too much and I'm holding 55 to 60 degress F inside. Just finished the drywall after painting I'll hang a 80K tube heater.

thanks for the responses. I'll just have to put up with the torpedo noise one more winter. Next year will be on the market for a proper heater.

Curious. Mine isn't loud at all, and doesn't stink. The only downside I see is the amount of condensation you'll get. You'll have that with any type of propane since water is a byproduct of it's combustion.

Mine is about a 1/4 as loud as my 55,000 btu kerosene torpedo. I bought the smaller one that goes up to 75,000 btu so that I could use a 20lb bbq tank. I don't notice any strong odor especially after the kero heater. If your torpedo is kerosene I wouldn't think twice about buying one especially at $100 but if it is propane I would just wait it out until next year.
I can't wait for real heat but first things first I need to finish the ceiling and insulate:)
