I did some work with animal control on house calls. Our direction was keep your eyes open to everything. Write it all down the moment you are back in the truck. This all predates 9/11. We had someone report their X-BF for having a Gator in his basement. When the team went to get the gator... it Turns out... he also had a rattle snake, pipe bomb factory and canon in his basement as well. Fun weekend.

Did you need a warrant to initially go in?

To get the gator ... yes ... but while we are in... EYES open ... PENCIL sharp. That's how it works. Lets stop now... don't want to get the thread closed. All the criminals went to jail... bombs secured and exploded... gator moved on to nicer gig... snake into the wind... witness protection perhaps.

not to derail the thread either. But if a house inspector needed to get a warrant to see if there was a new water heater installed, that just raises the level of bureaucratic waste for nothing important.

In these houses there are no flex lines, it's all hard piped that code didn't change until 2018.
I mean if one part in general is replaced for the same exact part, what's the difference? How are they going to do anything about it? Say the p trap on the sink corrodes and starts to leak. It's replaced with another new one of the same that was there. No one is going to pull a permit to replace a p-trap. ................. well maybe someone milking a paid job.

I wouldn't have even know a permit was "required" to do such trivial work.

I agree but they do look for old appliances sitting out, one guy tore out a mud bathroom and put it in trash cans every week.
There is a lot they will not catch but some things they will while doing other inspections I.E you get a permit for a roof and sure enough the inspector shows up to look around.

Csst has been code a lot longer than 2018, however I'm assuming the flex line comment was about the connector line

And no they don't really check in va. There are no sale inspections.

It been in the code for a long time, but the local township didn't adopt the newer codes until they were forced to by PA state law.

Exactly.

I think the legal "loophole" is that a homeowner can do any repairs himself if he pulls the permit and has it inspected, that's likely why we can buy it all.

I'm not saying any guy off the street go into business for himself as a gas fitter without the training and licenses. That's just shady.
But to say with a straight face that it requires a "Master" gas fitter to hook up a flex line would take politician level nerve.

Funny thing is, I've done plenty of stuff for my home successfully before I read on the internet I wasn't qualified to do it. Didn't say I wasn't capable, just not qualified.

Sigh... you misunderstood an SPCA officer entering a home in search of an illegal animal with hot water heaters and home inspectors. Sorry for the confusion, If I caused that.

Yes we should all be allowed to make pipe bombs and launching devices... sorry but that's not even remotely smart.
The pipe bomb is illegal, I very distinctly said that in post 40. Why are you implying anything other than what I typed in reply to your post directly?

As far as "launching device", i can only assume that you actually think that you could "launch" a pipe bomb out of a cannon????? WOW.
the only person who would likely die was the person who "launched" the cannon.

no confusion. I asked a different question. I believe a home inspector would need a warrant to inspect for a water heater installed without a permit. Just because someone disposed of a water heater does not mean they installed another one in its place. Maybe they disposed one had been sitting around as junk for years. Maybe they like to take cold showers.

My whole point is that between the snitching garbage guys, the overzealous home inspectors, and the obliging "judges" or whatever authority grants the warrant. There's a lot to time and money being wasted for pretty much nothing.

Reading this thread is the first of heard of something like this, so my agitation over it is pretty fresh.

This isn't like making an addition to a home. It's simply undoing and redoing a few fittings

In the Chicago area, avoiding permits is a high art form.
I got tagged a few times by the village for not having one (fence repairs), and skated on some things (replacing all windows).
Just play dumb and be courteous, and they just have you get the permit.
Usually I end up educating the inspector (stone veneer) or getting complimented by him (shed build).
A home buyer doing a permit audit is very very rare around here. A realtor told me someone tried it as a negotiating tool on a home purchase. The seller simply told them to get lost.

We're in the midst of building a new house. We have propane, so it may be different if you're running natural gas. We're installing a 6 burner Bluestar range/oven. The installation manual calls for a minimum 3/4" line feeding it. HVAC company installed a 1-1/2" line into the house, that necks down to a 1" line directly feeding it. Might see what the installation manual for your 8 burner range calls for?

Permits are like Badges; some of us don’t need “Stinking Badges”.

When necessary I will plead Ignorance or Youthful Enthusiasm and throw myself on the mercy of the courts.
