That is a 1950's snap on KR56, 6 drawers, 26" wide, 12" deep. Just FYI, that is not really a road box, but more of a top chest. It was like the chest of the late 40's till mid 50's.

How much are they asking for it? Hard to tell from pics the extent of the rust, but it looks like it might be pretty bad on the bottom. IDK, depending on what it looked like, and how the drawers and top worked in person ~$50 tops. :dunno:

Here is description: This box is late 40s, early 50s era, paint is rough, but overall shape is not bad, not too beat up. drawers all work nice and drop front does too.

Seller is asking $30 for it.

I'd go buy it as long as the bottom isn't rusted out. But I like the older boxes, YMMV

I've got the smaller 3-drawer version of this box. I rescued it from a yard sale for $10 and yes, this vintage double wall construction is very rust prone on the bottom.

Also, the paint on the early boxes is nowhere near as tough as the later ones. Start cleaning an early box and most of the paint goes away. With the later boxes, the rust can be scrubbed off and the paint starts to shine. If you can believe it, this photo is the "after."

"Road box" is often misused on craigslist/eBay to describe any drop-front-cover box with a lock.

However, the Snap-on road box is a specific extra-heavy-duty line of boxes made to stand up under the pounding of being filled with tools and riding on the back of a service truck. They weigh about 50% more and cost at least 50% more than the looks-similar-but-lighter-construction top boxes.

Nice box Packard, something like KRA-53, nice little box, great price. Sad the emblem is broken, those are my personal favorite SO emblem, remind me of the old Stingray logo.

:+1: On the road chest. People throw that word aroud quite a bit. I think the only "road chest" from that era first came out in the 60's and was the KRA-57. It was wider than the other top boxes and was specifically designed as a tough road chest.
