Quick release ratchet design old vs new

I've been browsing this forum for quite a while now and recently signed up. I have a question about the differences in the design of the modern quick release ratchets compared to the older ones. On all of the newer ones (made in the last 15 years or so) I notice that the anvil is drilled all the way through, so the pin will protrude from the end of the anvil when the button is pressed. On the older ones, the end of the anvil is closed off, so the pin is hidden internally. Is there a reason why the newer ones are drilled all the way through? Is this a better, more durable design, or is the older style better? Any thoughts or facts about this would be greatly appreciated. I've been wondering about this for a long time, but can't seem to find an answer.

My guess is that it is cheaper. I would assume that the mechanism works better as more sealed from a perspective of cleanliness. I doubt that there is much difference in strength.

Interesting. Just had a look at my ratchets. The anvils on current Facom QR ratchets are closed off.
