I like them preferably with flushed release button. ratchets of both types have a place ...

I dunno, I like it. Never had much problem w bumping it and dropping a socket.

I’ll use either style, though.

Honestly doesn't make a huge difference to me. I have a SO with QR which is my go to 3/8 and a proto without which is my go to 1/2. Only thing about quick release is that I use the proto considerably more so I occasionally forget to press the button on the SO when pulling off the socket and get the I'm an idiot feeling. I really don't like the QR buttons that are flush just because they are harder enough to press that I might as well just not have it.

The new Kobalt mini head 72-tooth ratchet looks and feels like the first recessed button that I wouldn't hate. I like the Williams/Blue Point quick release ratchets but I also have a few regular ratchets, honestly, it doesn't bother me using either.

The recessed button QR bugs me because you have to dig your thumb an awkward way. The new mini-head Kobalt solves this by chamfering around the button. It looks and feels a damn nice ratchet, pretty surprising.

My go to in 1/4 and 3/8 are Snap On dual 80 qr flex heads because I always have problems removing sockets when my hands are greasy. In 1/2 I'll use whatever, but do tend to grab my Proto j5449xlqr that is quick release. It just makes things quicker and easier IMO.

Always wanted to try one of those, they look nice. But I'd want it in a long pattern, 15" more or less

Edit: That would be the Proto J5450XLQR

I prefer a QR for the same grezzy hands issue. But I do have several that aren't and when there's a chance I'm doing something close to the bowels of hell and have concerns I could hit the eject button at the wrong time, those intentionally get used.

I prefer QR. I’m not a professional auto mechanic so to me its just simpler to take sockets on and off.

There has been much discussion on how most Snapon guys with non QR ratchets HATE the Craftsman sockets due to it being so difficult to take off. My go to 3/8 ratchet is a Snapon FR80 and it works just fine with my Craftsman sockets.

Yea I was going to get one, but the fear of breaking the square drive because of all that extra leverage kept me from buying. I just stuck with my trusty 15" SK round head. I'll tell you though, the Proto is indeed "built like a brick **** house" as many have said before in regards to these ratchets.

There are hundreds of threads on this subject already.

That said, I was just out in the garage this weekend installing a FWD transaxle using both QR and non-QR ratchets. I like the QR just a touch better, but didn't find myself really preferring one over the other.

I remember my first qr ratchet. Thought I was in heaven. So most of my were and are qr. But I have others without it and they are just fine. But qr prevents the socket from coming off in most instances and that was very desirable to me as a tech. But really, get and use what you like, why would you use something you didn't like ?

I am in the same boat as you I don’t see the issue I own a few snap on dual 80s none are QR. I mainly use my tllf72, fl80, sf80 and I use mostly craftsman USA for chrome sockets I’ve had very few issues. Good positive engagement. Sometimes they get stuck Mostly caused by dirt on ratchet/socket and the occasional greasy hands but I usually wear gloves so if I’m that greasy that I can’t undo the socket its probably time for a glove change anyway. Before it spreads

I do own a few QR ratchets but HF CM ones only. They have their place.

Most of my ratchets are not quick release and I prefer those. Quick release for me quick exit of socket and extension in parts unknown.

I prefer to not have QR and out of the 15 to 20 ratchets that I have floating around my tool box / cart I have maybe 4 QR's and none are on my cart. I don't think I have seen a Dual 80 or a Eighty8 in QR in real life...

I prefer quick release ratchets. It makes it much easier to change sockets especially when your hands are greasy or oily.
