Quick Shop Lighting suggestions...

Any quick suggestions on my shop lighting? 3 rows or 4 rows? If I do four rows I either have to spread out the fixtures and not tandem the fixtures together, which will add installation cost (I suspect), or do 40 fixtures instead of 30, but that seems rather excessive. I like the idea of 4 rows so I could move my shop heater to the middle of the room.

Electrician may have to start working in the shop tomorrow unexpectedly. I thought I had more time dang it!

Sorry this drawing is a mess with notes. Shop is 36' x 48' with a 12' 4-1/2" sidewall, white metal rib ceiling with the ribs running the long length of the shop, I think, so they lay between the ribs. Painted OSB walls.

OK I went to your build thread to get the 12ft ceiling height. Here's a very quick no frills layout (link to 3 page PDF). Just ignore that the fixture states James Industry Group - as that's just the IES file I used. Fixtures = 2 lamp strip lights from page 1 of the Best Light Fixture thread.

If you want more detailed, I'll need a CAD drawing file and it won't happen today.

All dimensions are from interior walls, thus the space is 35' x 47'

The linked layout is 4 rows of 8 tandem fixtures spaced 13ft apart. Fixtures over stairs and bathroom can either be deleted (yielding less lumens at workplane than linked PDF) or moved over to 3ft from wall (yielding more lumens at workplane than linked PDF)

Thanks so much. Do you think it's a problem mounting those fixtures perpendicular to the ribs? I would have to split the rows of fixtures, or delete one in the middle of each row, for the heater hanging in the middle as well.

Ribs? not sure I understand. If you mount the fixtures as you originally posted, the space between the vehicle and wall will have insufficient light. Any chance of rotating the heater 90°? Then put the fans left and right of center.

I have to roll, so I won't have any responses till this evening.

I can't rotate the heater. The attached picture is shows a light fixture mounted inbetween the ceiling panel ribs. If I run my lights the other way, they would mount perpendicular to the ribs. Not sure if that's an issue or not.

I found out today, that the ribs in the ceiling are of little concern and I have until Monday now to make my final choices. This is what I worked on today based on your quick lighting layout. Thoughts? I'm open to most anything, but the heater needs to run that direction, although it could move forward or backward in the shop.

No need to light up the top of the lav & utility room is there?
You could make a change there.

LED lamps don't like heat and lamps look way too close to the heater.

Are the stairs open or enclosed?
What size are the fans?
Do you have the architect CAD file (without all the stuff you put on there)?

The top part of the stairs above the landing are enclosed but the lower part is not. I have not purchased fans yet, I just know I want a couple. I have a Revit file, does that work? I may be able to export it in another format.

climb.on - The drawing you sent has no bathroom and the stairs are on the left rear. Your prior pics have a bathroom and stairs on the right rear. Which is current?

The bathroom and stairs in the pics are accurate. I must have grabbed an old version of the cad file mistakenly. I can grab a current cad file tomorrow morning if needed.

Here you go:

Avg 84fc @ 30" workplane
Total Power: 1280W
130L/W
Total Cost: $1,120

Qty.16
2ft. LED Linear High Bay - 80 Watt - 150W Equiv - Dimmable - 10,400 Lumens - LumeGen - $70 (link)

(linked to larger image)

Dialux Report (link) - Location dimensions from interior walls on page 2.
Once again, ignore that the report shows a 12000 lumen Lithonia IBH series. I modified that IES file to 10400 lumen 80W

Thanks Platonic. I like this a lot. It's more expensive for the fixtures unfortunately, but it does lay out nicely. Did the T8's just not lay out right?

It's actually not more expensive. The previous layout I linked to was 73fc with 32 2-lamp led strip light fixtures. Each fixture total = ~$35 = $1120 plus shipping. So same price, more light, better layout and no shipping. You're lucky it was raining this morning or I wouldn't have had the time to experiment.

And yeah, I have 2 other layouts with the T8's and they really kinda sucked. It's hard to design around unknown variables like you have.

Am I correct about their being a ceiling over the stairs?

Don't go any closer to the walls than the layout shows. You'll get glare.

There is a ceiling over the stairs and a handrail up to the corner landing. Then their is a full height wall and high angled ceiling after the landing. I see they only have 5000k in these fixtures. I tend to think I want a warmer light, but I'm sure I'll get used to the whiter 5000k

The price for that fixture is too good to pass up. If you really want 4000K it will cost around $100 ea. from another distributor and you'll probably have to pay shipping. I would jump on it while they're still available. Seems every good deal I post goes out of stock quickly.

Yup that would put it out of reach. I'll do it.

Will the ceiling and walls be drywall and painted? If yes, strongly recommend flat white ceiling paint and eggshell for walls. Gloss paint does not help lighting, it creates glare. It's the difference between specular and diffused reflectance, and you want diffused.

The ceiling will be white rib steel panels. I think it is at least an egg shell sheen. The walls are currently just OSB, but I'll be painting them some lighter color. Maybe not white, but I'll be sure to keep the sheen down. That's good to know. The floor will either be polished concrete (like a big box store), or epoxy. Still trying to decide that too.

Oh yeah, that's right. I forgot you already told me your ceiling is rib steel. No problem there. Walls are the primary issue with respect to glare and paint sheen.

First time post, I have read almost all the topics on this forum and feel like I have a much better understanding of how this should be done. I have downloaded the dialux software, could only get dialux 4.13 due to old graphics card. I was able to download the information for the best light ever but could use help on what to use for this highbay. My original intent was to use that light but this post stopped me in my tracks. My ceiling height is 12’1”. Help with figuring out a comparable luminaire would be appreciated. Oh I also saw you mentioned do not get any closer to the wall with this high bay light due to glare? Maybe there is something n dialux software that will show that? Thanks for any help.

Update sorry found the Lithonia luminaire u used, how did you manipulate it to the specs to match the proposed? Also glare question still applies, thanks

I don't recall if Dialux 4.13 has the ability to manipulate fixture lumen output. Sorry it's been too long. Suggest finding a fixture IES file as close as possible to the fixture you're considering.

As far as glare on the walls from high output fixtures being too close to the walls, there is no universal consensus. I try to keep the fc on walls no higher than 3x mean workplane.

Well I tried to manipulate the file a couple of different ways. First by doing an edit on the file while in text format and hen saving the changes, that did not affect the linked file. I did delete it and the reimport. I was however able to change it when picking luminaire by editing the actual luminaire luminous flux from 12205 to 10400 and power from 112 to 80. I have not tested yet if that truly made a difference on the calculation. Is this similar to what you do or am I missing a step?

Update: I just tested it with same configuration a 3 row by 4 got average fc of 110 and average fc of 94 with the manipulated setting. Btw I will have a drywall ceiling so I assume I need to drop thes down by the suggested 18”? Using 5/8 layer of fire rated rock I don’t suppose that makes a difference. That is how I ran the callcs.

Sounds like you did it right in Dialux. The LumeGen fixture can be surface mounted with the right mounting brackets which they strangely don't offer. I found this bracket for another GJ member - https://beeslighting.com/maxlite-high-bay-accessories/p/BLHE90-SMK not sure if it fits, but it certainly looks like it would.

Also see this this video from GJ member howpeculiar:

I have no idea where I got that 18” needed for this light? I went back to try to find it and cannot. I have looked at too many I guess and they are running together evidently, Thanks for the link to the possible mounting bracket and for the video. I am going to keep plugging away with this dialux. Pretty neat tool. Thanks

Anyone have these 1x2 high bays mounted? I was expecting to flush/surface mount them, but looks like my only option is chains or pendant mount, but I'm not sure how either one will actually work. Anyone have some pics?

climb.on - You should watch the video I linked above in post #28. You'll have to discover for yourself if the brackets linked in that same post will fit.

Lights went in yesterday. Oh heaven let the light shine down....

We decided just to use the included chains and hang the lights. This dropped them about 8"-10" off the ceiling. So the light diffuser is right at 11' off the ground. I have room to shorten the chains and move them back up about 4"-6" if that would change anything....but the only thing I think it might change, if I raised them up a bit, is the shadow at the top of the wall, but I'm not sure I care about that. I see some light shadows on the floor, from ladders and equipment, but not much. The only other change I made to Platonic's plan was the light by the stairway. I have decided to put in a door and extend the wall to the ceiling there so we slid that one fixture over about 3' to clear the wall.

Another huge THANK YOU to Platonic Solid for sharing your expertise and recommendation. You are the MAN!

Nice :thumbup: Looks like the area under the stairs filled in nicely. Pretty much any finish (other than black) on those walls would reduce any shadowing - The few shadows I see are already very faint.

Edit: What's the plan, if any, for the wall finish?
