Quick Tip on Ratchets

G'day gents. I thought I'd pass on a little quick tip to you guys, maybe it helps someone out.

So here's the introduction: I used to depend on quick release ratchets. Mainly because sealed heads tend to leave sockets behind stuck on a fastener. At least for me anyway. But, since I got this guy, I haven't thought twice of QR.

But ironically I have the exact OPPOSITE problem. The ball spring that holds the socket is so tight I have to do this:

Maybe not a problem for the 1" deep well socket, cuz you have the leverage, but if you put a 1/4 shallow on there, forget it.

So what I did is put a 1" long 3/8 extension bar. My extension has a hole for the ball to fall into, and on this ratchet, lord have mercy that thing is ON there for good. Plus I find that the extra inch of clearance quite handy. Better on knuckles too.

Now all I got to do to change sockets is sexily pinch the sides

Does your craftsman sockets have double groove? Try different socket that has normal one groove.

I don't use those sockets on other than quick release button ratchet.

Never knew the B-52's (still looking for a nice one!) had such a strong spring behind detent ball. Nice work around though and great to see a B-52 in action.

Thanks man! I got this one from bargainzplus here in nice condition. They still make them brand new.
On a side note, I got the B-52 and S-52 and I tell you what, soak these in ATF for a week and see what happens.

What grooves?

I suspect it may be the socket as well. I've had lots of B52's and none ever were hard to remove a socket from. then again, your ratchet could be defective.
Try it with a different socket brand.

I rarely use a socket without a spinner and an extension. Only exception is when there are clearance issues. I like the SO spinner but whichever one they really help.

Great tips here. JAFE (Steve) does anyone else make one of those spinners?

Thanks,
Steve

What is this!
I didn't know they made these.
Got as part number? as I'd love to try this out.

@airbuff At first, I did think the ratchet was defective and needed a rebuild. All my other ratchets I can push the ball in with my finger. On this one I have to use lineman's.
I soaked it in ATF for a few days thinking it was rust frozen but nope. Even left a socket half on to keep the ball pressed in, hoping to get the fluid in there. Nope.
But I'm content with my solution. My only gripe used to be that the ratchet will forever sit in the box with the extension on it. Every time I use it though, it brings me such happiness I don't even care anymore :D

Bluepoint has some. Proto made them but not sure if they are still in the catalog. I have seen others around as well.

You guys are great.
I went out and got this:

Right away I noticed how large this thing is. You could use it standalone as a palm ratchet.

So put it on the S-52 and you get this:
IMG_0424.jpg

And it turn into a freaking club. This thing is HEAVY for a ratchet. Don't get me wrong though, I like the substantial feeling of it. I'm the same way with my guitars too.. I can't stand those light weight balsa wood geeters...

Anywho.

There are several pros and cons of these things I've noticed.
Pros:
Fingertip control is awesome.
Also, normally you need two hands to change direction on the superratchets. One has to turn the selector and one has to hold the drive end. With the spinner you can use your index finger to brace and your thumb to select.
IMG_0422.jpg

Cons:
Super bulky. Aesthetically it may bother some. To me I think it's cool. Functionally, this thing needs acres of real estate to operate now.
IMG_0420.jpg

Flip side of that clearance though, is that you can really grab the neck of the sucker and your knuckles will clear everything.

Overall I'm super happy and thankful you guys shared these things. I do think it is an improvement over just a 1" extension bar because of the knurled ring. Tomorrow the B-70 should arrive for my B-52 and I'm super excited for it.
Cheers everyone!

I was so impressed with a B-52 purchased here that I recently purchased an S-52. These are perhaps the most under appreciated ratchets out there. There’s just something about the heft and balance that feels right.

My SO-80s are great - but they're not Superratchets!
