quick tricks for dumb problems...

i couldn't think of a better title, but after finding this old remedy on the internet i had to share it here and ask if anyone else had any others.

i had to pull the fuel line off a 59 tr3 and got fuel all over my hands. washed my hands twice w/ gojo w/ no luck. googled it and came up w/ used coffee grounds. pull the filter out of the maker, rub the grounds into my hands, rinse w/ warm water. smell gone, but now my hands smell like coffee. good thing i like coffee...

so let em rip! any other remedies for common issues?

Ben, similar to your problem my father has found that laundry powder works well for getting all the grease and oil off your skin after a long day in the shed

I've found that washing the truck after getting my hands really greasy/nasty will get them clean...

One of the most used liquids in my shop is Simple Green at about 50 50 with water. Use it clean almost everything, but especially for washing my hands. Simply spray on your hads rub together and dry. Get's almost all the grease and smells off your hands and most of the odors, including gas. Give it a try.

i use that and or greased lightning,whichever is closest to me at the time

I still like orange gojo to clean my hands when I have gotten greasy. but then I follow that up with some of that alcohol based hand sanitizer. that gets the residual gojo off and gets rid of the grease smell too.

Maple syrup works great for packing wheel bearings. Makes driving with the windows down seem smell like breakfast. (Just make sure you use the real stuff. The Aunt Jemima stuff made from corn syrup won't last.)

Or to prevent it, scratch a bar of soap before starting work. Soap gets stuck under nails until you wash your hands later...

I have found that Mr. Clean works really well for washing almost anything plastic, i.e. motorcycles, ATV's. It makes everything shine like new. Works well at eating grease too. I also use steel wool to clean bugs off the windshield and chrome bumper. 0000 is fine enough it doesn't scratch chrome either.

In the summer, and particularly after a long road trip down south, the front of my truck / cars are always plastered with a million dried on dead bugs when I go to wash them.

An hour or so before I plan to actually start washing the cars, I just spray down all the bug carnage with some WD40.

When I go to wash the car later, 95% of the bug carnage just comes right off with the wash, without having to resort to any kind of specialized bug and tar remover, or fingernails/plastic squeegee/jackhammer, to get them off.

For me the worst part of painting is cleaning brushes/rollers. By putting plastic wrap over the paint tray / brushes and rollers and then putting everything on the fridge you can take breaks, put stuff away until the next day etc and it doesn't dry up. In fact this summer I was touching up some exterior paint on the house in the dusk hours after work and could put things up for almost a week and next time I come back to it, brushes rollers etc were just fine. So for a prolonged painting project you end up washing things once instead of every day.

I usually just cut my fingernail short and dont worry about the grease under the nails. In fact never in my life had I actual had this problem

You are scratching the chrome and the window when you use any steel wool on windows or chrome. If you want the chrome to last do not use steel wool.

To get the Gas smell off your hand use the scent elimination hand wipes. Get them in the the Hunting section of Walmart. They work Great!!!

I would assume this stisps the wax as well, no big deal I guess. Does the WD-40 have any negative impact on the pain/clearcoat I wonder?

This has always worked great for me too!

Pam spray cooking oil mixes with diesel fuel, if you get it on your hands. Then wash with Dawn or something and it's all gone. Ditto with turpentine

Living on a farm/ranch i've had my hand in about everything, some of the smells are just nasty!! Most hand cleaner do just that ,clean,but hand still smell!! The best solution I have found is to then wash your hand with TOOTH PASTE! sounds strange but it works!!

For removing bugs. Mist them with water and clean them off with a dryer sheet. Works great! Also for bugs, they are MUCH easier to remove when "fresh". I always try to get them cleaned off as soon as I'm parked at home.

If your hands smell after they're clean, rub them on stainless. Your sink will do fine, but they sell stainless bars shaped like soap in most kitchen and home stores if you have a plastic or enameled sink for $5-10.

Amazon has one for $7.

Gojo cherry is my favorite hand cleaner, it busts through anything and works far better than the orange IMO. The 2L size goes on sale at Advance every other week for $8. This week it's $12.

- Pledge (the furniture spray) to get bugs off the front of the car. Works great.
- Nu Finish on plastic windows on convertables.
- Hot water (hot, just before scalding) to wash the interior of the car. Cleans auto carpet and upholstry to showroom.
-Use your wiper blade to dry your car at a self-serve wash, if you are out of towels. That is what they do at rental car agencies in Mexico when they wash them
- Dirtbikes and Atv's- Take off the chain and put in your oil catch pan and drain the hot engine oil on it. It is a cheap way to clean it. Wipe with a rag til dry and re-install.

Just break off a piece of "Paper" in between the bolt and socket, There you go!

If still not tight, "Fold Paper" in half! Hard to believe!

Sort of related tip I change oil filters on in board boat motors mostly Mercs and Volvos and they are upside down a super PIA deal. An old waterman showed me a great tip: wrap a gallon sized zip lock over the top and around the whole assembly after you have loosened it about 1/8 of a turn or less close the opening best you can spin it off and flip it in the bag almost no oil goes into the bilge and nothing on my hands to mess up the seats and carpets

Spray Pam or other cooking spray on the front of the car. Go out and drive by a lake and get it loaded up with bugs. Arrive at cruise night and wipe off the bugs with a rag.
