Quick welding question

Im in the process of building a 1941 harley flathead chopper and I am getting ready to build the exhaust, once my cylinders come back from LA sleeve. I will be having the exhaust chromed and was wondering about using stainless filler. Will using stainless filler effect the chroming or should i stick with regular ER70? Thanks!

If the exhaust isn't stainless then I would just use ER70.

ER70 if the exhaust is mild steel. Using stainless filler on a carbon steel exhaust gives a more brittle alloy, and will be prone to cracking especially in an exhaust system with both mechanical vibrations and hot/cold cycles.

If the base material is plain steel, then use plain steel electrode/filler.

If the base material is stainless steel, then use the appropriate stainless steel electrode/filler for the specific stainless steel alloy that you are welding.

If you are welding stainless steel to mild steel, then that is different. Most of the time in that case, you would use 309 stainless steel electrode/filler.

Of course you haven't told us what materials you are welding together for your exhaust system.

Agreed ER70 if the exhaust is steel. And yes it will a ***** to get stainless chrome plated together with mild steel, as mild steel needs a copper or nickel plate before chrome, but stainless is already full of nickel and needs a sulfuric acid bath before plating to have any hope of working.

That was the answer I was looking for, how the stainless filler would react to chroming. Thank you!

Sorry, The exhaust tubing is mild steel.

Saying ER70 is like saying it a Chevy 3.....350, 327, 396 lots of variation.
Carbon steel I would use ER70-S2
