Quicky stupid? question

I'm running a 240V 50A line from a sub panel in an attached garage wall, up through the attic and back down to an outlet. Do I need to run the 6ga wire inside conduit if it is contained within the structure?

If it's a cable assembly like NM cable (Romex®) then no, if single conductors then it has to be in conduit.

It seems as long as I'm not running below grade to a basement I'm OK.

It's only about a 20' run and there is nothing short of an earthquake to damage it. Animals maybe?

THHN/THWN in conduit can be #8 Copper with a 50 Amp circuit.

If it is NM #6 is required
