I'm looking for a good air compressor for home garage workshop. It will sit between my garage and neighbors house so I'd like to get some thing as quiet as possible. I want mininum of 60 gal, V-type compressor, not Chinese, and would prefer not to mortgage house to buy it. What do you suggest? Thanks

really if you dont want it to bother your neighbors, but you dont want it to anoy you either, place the compressor in your shop and pipe the air inlet and inlet air filter outside. this will get rid of a lot of noise. its a pretty common practice is suburban area automotive shops that have neighbors complaining about noise.

I got a Kobalt (rebranded Sanborn) 60 gallon 3 HP from Lowe's on clearance with 20% off in January ($300). Not bad for the money, but noisy. Oil bath unit, but pump spins too fast and makes it hot and loud. If I had to do it all over again, this is what I would get:
Eaton 60 gallon:

or this:
Eaton 80 gallon:

or this:
Eaton 60 gallon two-stage:

any particular reason why you want a V-type? where are you located? check e-bay or your local craigslist.Champion has the R30D pump,it's a v-type and can be run on 7.5 hp.Saylor Beall has the 707 pump that runs form 5 to 10 hp.Quincy's Model 4125 and 5120 are V-type pumps.be on the lookout for older Dayton/Speedaire as some of them had Champion v-type pumps.imho,I'll go used to save money.

Hey 3/8, I was looking for a "V" piston pump because a post said to avoid the vertical twins. Is that vaild advice? Hell, Eaton has a 5hp, 60 gal with THREE pistons for $950. Is that even better or worse? Noiser or more quiet? Rick

I have this one, it is quiet enough to have a conversation within a few feet of it without having to raise my voice. Pump speed is 650 rpm & will run any air tool up to a 3/4" CP impact no problem, would no doubt run a bigger one but I've never had one larger than that hooked up to it.

Have 542719 air filters in it available from the automotive parts store which fit better than the ones that came with it. Was 1100.00 when I bought mine + shipping which came to something like 1250 total to the house.

if that's the case 80% of the compressor pumps out there,as per that advise are to be avoided.some of the best pumps ever built from Quincy,Saylor Beall,Champion,Curtis,Gardner,Kellogg,Devilbiss/Devair were vertical's.that advice probably meant the newer vertical's coming out of China.

a lot of members have had good experience with Eaton, only thing with it is the pumps are made in China.

for $950,I'll go used.get me an industrial one from those said names.you can find compressors with 3 phase motors for cheap.$300 to $500 range, then get a 5 to 7.5 hp single phase Baldor from e-bay.the Baldor 5 hp motor are always on e-bay for $300 shipped.

in the last few months I have acquired a Quincy for $100,2 Saylor Beall's,one for $100,the other one for $200.a Champion for $150,and a C-aire for 200.
