Quiet Air Compressor

I am setting up a small shop at home, 35' x24', with some machines. I will need to run a 240vac 1ph compressor in the 5 hp range to handle a blast cabinet, probably in the 15 cfm range. Vertical tank for space savings.

I see some new compressors advertised as quiet and want to know if anyone has one and is it really quiet?

Unless you go with a screw compressor it will be relatively loud for that much power. If blasting is not your primary concern perhaps consider a 2HP California Air Tools along side a standard 5HP compressor. Most days just run the CAT for light duty like clearing chips, and engage the 5HP compressor when you do need to use the blast cabinet.

Fact...the slower a pump turns the quieter it will be. I'd recommend either a Quincy QR 325, a Champion R-15B or Saylor-Beall 705. Any of those three will last you a lifetime, all are dependable and all three are made in the USA...NOT just assembled, but manufactured in the USA.

Slower motor and pump speed is the key. Might check these, can't tell for sure if the last 2 are single or 3 phase, be sure to ask. I have mine outside on the side of the shop in its own little shed, whisper quiet. If you can do that you might find a horizontal on an even better deal.

The first listing...the Quincy QT5...they are NOT quiet, I had one in my home shop. The QR series are the 'quiet' running pumps...pressure lubricated too, although probably the priciest pumps CFM for CFM.

I have that 575 rpm champion listed and it is nice and quiet. Plenty of air but also plenty of money as well.

Yes, they do.

If you can get past that, they are a pretty good compressor. I've got a Polar Air and like it alot. It isn't the quiet series, but is still pretty quiet due to the slow spin speed.

Slow running usually equals quiet.

I would consider separating the compressor/motor from the tank and built perhaps 3x3x3' isolated cabinet for it. Could be fun and rewarding project.

The tank can be anywhere, so to speak.

It all depends on how quiet is quiet enough for you. Many times a low RPM compressor will do the trick. If your shop has brick or cinder block walls, you can put some foam or insulation on the wall behind it to absorb some of the reflective noise.

We do offer several options, but you typically pay for quiet.

Thanks guys. I have been involved with other work so I didn't get a chance to get back here till now. I just got in my new rotary phase convertor too.
I will look over the recommendations listed and see.

+1. Keep in mind these are world famous, world class name brand offerings. There are a bunch of lesser known but mostly comparable quality machines out there. Also, not all the imports are bad news. (Fu Sheng, for example, is an excellent pump some US mfg use.) Not all name brands are good ( Retail Quincy and Tractor Supply IR are not so great but top dollar)

Jun-Air? I have an old pancake compressor made in 1975 (passed from Grandfather to Father to me, and it is the quietest compressor I have ever seen.
