I have been researching die grinders that are considered "Quiet" types such as the Sunex SX5203 and the AirCar 6255. Both are relatively quiet with 82dBA to 85dBA no load sound levels and both are about the same price-wise. The one thing that I prefer on the Sunex over the Aircrat is the safety trigger, which the AirCat lacks. Any thoughts, experiences or recommendations on the two?

What would u been doing with it? Polishing seems like the only thing that would be louder than the grinder itself.

I've been searching for the past hour and it seems like no one has any reviews on the Sunex SX5203. I might have to be the first to try it out.

I have a silver eagle Thats fairly quiet. I bought it off the matco truck a few months ago when the had the special where if you bought the angle die grinder you got the straight die grinder for free. Ive been impressed with it so far. I like it alot better than the craftsman I had before.

I've got the Aircat grinders, both 90 degree and straight. I don't have any problems with the triggers not having safeties, at least, not so far. I'd guess it's a little less easy to bump them into action, compared to the light action and long travel of a traditional lever/trigger. But in theory, if you stepped on it, yeah, it could spring into action.

Are they quiet? I dunno. I've not owned the traditional kind, and I wear ear muffs anyway. But in general, all of my Aircat stuff doesn't hurt the ears or shriek or howl. There have been times I've used the grinders to clean something up and wondered, Hoo boy, how loud are the normal kind?

I'm a wuss about my ears. :dunno:

You may have convinced me to get the AirCat. Most of the reviews are positive for the 6255 and it looks like a good value. How well can you control speed with what looks like a very short-travel lever?

I'm having good luck with it. I've never known another kind, so maybe it's that, but I'm finding if I squeeze the button closer to the tail, I can get less speed out of it.

And Mickey O, I do wear the ear muffs, yes, while using Aircat. I've only got one set of ears, and... well, I've got to wear headphones (and earplugs) at work to drown out the monkey house that is my office. Only one set of ears to last me many more decades.

Amazon has the Aircat 6255 for $75.90 with free shipping. It looks like the lowest price.
I've been looking for a quiet one for a while now under $100. Looks like it might be my newest tool.

That's where I got it from. I haven't tried it yet; awaiting some IR 67 grease to lubricate the drive mechanism. The price of the grease was about 1/3 the cost of the grinder, but it comes with air tool oil and the grease dispenser.
