Quieting Garage Doors

I have a two car basement garage with professionally installed (Overhead Door) doors and Genie openers. While it is a decent set up I would like to make it a bit less noisy, and have thought first about changing out the steel rollers for nylon. Is this a worthy project, or just a waste of time and money? Thank you for your opinions.

After some 600 homes and a steady stream of updated technology, products, and procedures, I can say that there is a considerable audible difference from old steel rollers to nylon rollers. But, that's IN the garage. What most people experience with attached garages and garage door openers is VIBRATION. And most of that comes from the opener itself.

I had one H/O that was emphatic About the "noise". So, after a few tries of cheap fixes by my garage door contractor and no content he did a total isolation.

The tracks were isolated from the hangers with rubber cushions, the hangers were isolated from the ceiling with rubber cushions, and the same for the opener along with changing it to a belt drive. The only measurable noise was the door itself- metal non-insulated. I wasn't about to change that.

Thanks "Bldr," I am mostly concerned with noise in the garage as it's no big deal upstairs. Good info, maybe I will swap out the rollers and call it good. Appreciate you sharing your experience.

just putting some spray lube on the tracks can quiet it down; it should be done every year or so, but it's easy to forget.

i have a newer gdo with a dc motor & that's really quiet.

I have a genie belt drive in the garage right next to the living room. You cant even hear it with the TV on. I cant believe how quiet that sucker is.

I have an attached garage with a 14' OHD and a Chamberlain belt drive opener. If the man door to the house is closed you can't hear the OHD open or close when inside the house. I added the MyQ mobile alert because I was paranoid about not waking up if someone managed to open while I was sleeping.

At the same time I can hear neighbors chain drive OHDs open from across the street.

edit: I also have nylon ball bearing rollers.

Nylon rollers and a belt drive opener. VERY quiet (plus mine has a "battery backup" so I can still get in or out if we lose power).

10 ball bearing nylon rollers, don't waste your money on anything else! A good GD spray lubricant on any ball bearings and at all hinge points. Don't put anything on your tracks.

One of the biggest contributors to noise especially on Genie screw drives is the back hangs, if there isn't a sway brace, Add one.
