Quikrete Epoxy Floor Question....

Hello All,

Last weekend, I spent the day coating my 3-car garage floor with Quikrete Garage Floor Coating in tan color. I laid a 2nd coating in some of the areas I felt I didn't cover well. These areas are still tacky when I touch it with my hand! Does it cure a lot slower when it is applied as a 2nd coat? The first coat was fairly dry. Thanks....

It should cure the same as the other as long as conditions are the same. Humidity and temperature play big rolls in cure time. Obvioulsy, the mixture ratio and mix time need to be correct also.

The weird thing is that the roller and tray are cured, rock solid while the floor is still tacky. maybe the floor has been cold? I live in Southern California where the weather has been around the 60's. I started this past Saturday and it was sunny but then got gloomy and wet on Sunday. Yesterday was cloudy as well but then cleared up in the evening.

In the event, say worst case, it doesn't cure fully, what can I do?

From what I've read on some products that is kind of cold for it to cure. Do you have a space heater you can crank up the temp in there for a few hours? If you mixed it right I has to cure I think.

I agree with the weather slowing the cure, epoxys don't like water and cold, heat or UV light will speed up the curing. Until then keep kids and small pets off.

well, it never fully cured...but because I was stepping on it over and over, it finally lost its tackiness. The sheen is no good but I didnt care since it was right in the entrance and it was a fairly small spot - I will no longer buy this product nor recommend it....

When you say you applied a 2nd coat- did you wait for the first to dry and mix up a new batch to paint down? or did you go over the wet area with the already mixed product?

Typically, epoxies cure from the inside out and if properly mixed will always cure(barring a manufacturer defect of course). Weather and humidy can affect cure times, but they should not prevent an epoxy from curing. As for externally applied sources to accelerate curing- this is NOT reccomended in any way:shocking: . Excess air movement or heat can flash cure the surface- trapping the epoxies' solvent medium (liquid) that is evaporating through the coating. If the surface is dry before the rest of the coating, the escaping vapors will cause the epoxy to wrinkle or bubble.
Just curious on the application and my $.02 on the curing.

I used Quikrete Epoxy in my garage and I would not recomend it. It's a waste of money and time. It lifted off after 2 weeks with the tires and on other places it peels of. In my old house I had a detached garage and I painted the floor with regular oil based paint from Lowes for $15/ gallon. I did grinding and welding and you name it. after 10 years when I moved out it still looked good.

I applied the first quote. I waited for the 12-24hr cure time to set foot on it. It was about 24 hours after I stepped on it and found it cured, except for the corner I just described. The next day, about 48 hours after I applied the first coat, I checked it again and it was still tacky. I then applied a second coat and I had the same issue. This was about 2 weeks ago and to this day, it remains tacky. There were nice hot sunny days, natural air flow going. I then tried the fan and heater approach - still tacky. The issue is that this product did not crosslink in this area thus resulting it tacky resin. Nothing flashed and no wrinkling or bubbling occurred. Also, remember we're only talking a few mils here. Again, I will not recommend this product.

Just a thought here - I really have no idea, but can you roll a little more hardner over this area to see if you can get it to kick? Sorry to hear you are dissatisfied. Nothing more fustrating then that. Good luck
