Considering buying a Quincy 214 that needs a little work. The compressor was purchased new by a homeowner in 1985 was used lightly on and off for a few years and has been sitting unused since then. Aesthetically it looks brand new but it isn't building pressure. The owner tells me it had always worked fine but after not turning it on for 10+ years something isn't right, thinking it must be something simple like a stuck check valve that needs to be cleaned. I don't necessarily want to get into a huge project with this thing but was thinking it probably can be made to work with minimal effort.

It looks to me like the compressor has a 40 gallon tank. Second part of the question is what is the compressor capable of CFM wise? Weighing my options, for a little more money I could probably go get a new campbell hausfeld cast iron pump 60 gallon rated at 11.5 CFM @ 40 PSI and 10.2CFM @ 90 PSI.

Those have disk valves and they are notorious for rusting in place when sitting, especially if sitting in a humid or condensation capable environment. That is a single stage (100psi) pump with, IIRC ~10CFM @ 90psi at max RPM. What it is currently putting out would depend on how fast they have it running. Should be in the 400-900rpm range. I can't seem to find my quincy spec sheet ATM.

Assuming it is the valves where might I find some documentation on how to go about repairing them? Ballpark what would I be looking at for parts or is this simply a matter of cleaning them? finally - you stated about 10 CFM at 100 PSI, how does that compare to the specs on the campbell compressor. Note I have added a picture of the compressor on my original post, the owner claims it is a 2 cylinder but I believe he is misinformed.

I'm fairly certain it is a twin piston unit, below the 210 they are single piston. Singe stage for certain (designated by the 2xx sereis). Should have two unloader towers on the head. Does it spin over freely without any major noises?

Give Quincy a call tomorrow they can send you a spec sheet on the pump; it will help if you know the ROC number.

Found this on another forum "The Quincy catalog indicates the 214 is: single stage, pressure lubed, air cooled, 2 3/4" x 2", 70 lbs shipping weight. Using 2 HP motor = 11.10 scfm, 100 psi, 810 rpm. Using 3 HP motor = 16.50 scfm, 100 psi, 1200 rpm.
