I need a movable compressor, and I don't do a lot of painting or sandblasting, so this is what I'm planning to buy...unless anyone here has strong opinions to the negative.

Looking for a step up from the big box compressors.

This one says Made in USA...although a reviewer pointed out the motor says Mexico. I can understand that...I wouldn't expect to find a USA made motor at this price.

Looking at the big box offerings...CH, Husky (same), Kobalt (also same I think), IR, Sears,etc...its hard to find one with any Made in USA content at all.

It looks like a real solid unit with great reviews across multiple sites.

Anyone have concerns about this compressor? Is it worth an extra $100-200 over the big box options?

Thanks!

I bought a 20 gallon Quincy last year. I posted about it here somewhere. I'm very unimpressed with it. If I had known what I know now I would have bought a cheaper one since the parts on mine are mostly imported and are the same as other cheaper compressors.

Mine was advertized as "Made in USA" when it should have been "assembled in USA from global components".

Dont spend $700 and shipping on this compressor get a Puma or a Campbell Hausfield instead same import parts just cheaper or spend $ 200 more and get a biger better quality unit.My buddy made this same mistake and regretted it big time.

Get an upright 60 gallon. Strap it to a fridge cart. Done. I do this with my 60gal Husky, and it is easy to move around when needed.

Did you look at the 30gal Powermate from Homedepot or the 30gal Kobalt at Lowes? I've looked at both of these and they seem to be fairly decent. They are about $200 cheaper than the Quincy.

that quincy does have a better performance specs but that's not a regular residential 110V.

You have to upgrade to 20A receptacle/breaker.

Yup...20A upgrade is no problem...happy to make that swap.

Sounds like conflicting reports of Made in USA components. I know the motor is Mexico, but was under the impression the pump and tank are USA.

Does anyone have one and can confirm either way.

I highly doubt it's USA components. I don't see any problem with foreign, chinese or mexican, parts.

Shop CL for an old Sears/Craftsman 2 or 3hp compressor. The old ones are either green or gold and I think made by CH. The 2 hp can run on 120V (with 20A wiring and breaker). These have horizontal tanks.

While most of these are pretty beat up, I have seen a few that look almost new. You should be able to pick one up for under $200.

I have a 60 gallon Harbor Freight upright single stage I bought off Craigslist for $265. It's in excellent condition and though its an import and I don't need it to be portable it has a lot more performance than what you're looking at for $700!

I'd suggest shopping some more and looking for a good used one.

It's not really a Quincey compressor. I have the same one but it's a Chicago Pneumatic, don't know who makes it but it's the exact same just different paint and stickers.
I use it at home, keeps up fine using die grinder and cut off tool but couldn't keep up with my needle scaler when chipping paint and rust off my railing for front steps. Also used a touchup spray gun to paint ceiling fan blades and had no problem keeping up.
Also only paid $455 for it around 3 years ago.

My only concern is if you do run a DA or some other long run air tool. From what I can see, its rated for 50% duty cycle. Not a problem for most jobs. But I know for sure when I'm sanding I can easily go for a couple of house only taking breaks to change sanding disks.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I'm replacing a oil-less Craftsman that died (motor burnt...tried swapping both the start and run caps, but nothing). It was very loud, and the frequency was very annoying...being near it actually made my teeth hurt. So not doing that again...

If they're all imports with equivalent parts, then I suppose it doesn't matter, and its better to shop on price.

I'll try calling Quincy and see how Made in USA it is...

I checked with Quincy, and they told me these compressors are built in SC.

Since Belaire is in SC and has the identical compressor, I called them. They were actually pretty helpful, and gave me some information:

- The pump is a B3800 made in Italy
- The tanks are made in the US in NC
- The units are assembled at the Belaire facility in SC
- He mentioned he thought the pressure switches are made in Japan, which is probably SMC (a reviewer mentioned the regulator is SMC).
- He was not aware of any components made in China

So this does appear to be a step up from the big box compressors that are mostly, if not all, made in China.

Anyone have opinions on Belaire?

I've got the 20 gallon quincy compressor, I'm very happy with it thus far. The tank isn't hug, but I've supplemented it with a couple of broken HF unit I grabbed off of CL. I'm upto about 40 gallons. Yes, it takes double the time to fill to the 135psi, but that's fine with me. The compressor is very quiet and I can rely on it working.

The old red 60gal Huskys are made in USA as well. It's cast right into the pump. These were the years of the "peak" HP ratings, though. No big deal, everyone knows what they actually put out.
