Quincy 325-14 intercooler repair advice

Hi guys,

I bought a quincy 325-14 for $100 off of a family when their father passed away. It looks like something hit the belt/flywheel cover and crushed part of the intercooler. Since this part is around $725 new, I'm wondering if this is repairable? Would cutting out the crushed section and brazing in new be possible? Or better yet, anyone have a spare?

Thank you for the help!

Thanks guys. Besides the fins, the tube is also crushed about 50%. I’m less worried about the fins. I wish I knew of something that I could put down in the tube and expand it back to its original shape. Has anyone brazed in a new section of tube on something like this?

A mandrel might work to reshape the tubing. I've bought some finned tubing and it was very difficult to bend.

Find a round bar a little smaller than the ID. Taper one end and bend the other at 90 degrees. You will need that bend to drive the bar back out after you drive it in. You take a risk that the pipe will split but at least then you will have something you can braze to close. As you stated, the fins are not a big deal. This is an application for heavy duty lubricant.

I ended up getting the intercooler fixed up. I am building pressure and no leaks. Now it seems my unloader is not working. When restarting it does not want to rotate and pump due to the pressure in the cylinder/tank. IMG_5110.jpeg

Hmm weird. I have not changed anything, that’s where the unloader tower was when I got it. I wonder why someone would change that??

I have an intercooler from a t45 that is crushed. One day, the plan is to shove some ball bearings through it. Probably start small and work it up to the right diameter, or close to it. Similar to op, I didn't pay much for it so I don't really want to sink a ton of money into it.

The pictures I can find of Quincy 325s show two configurations. One with one unloader, another with two. The single unloader configuration has the unloader on the front (HP?) cylinder. Maybe someone accidentally switched yours?

Right now it's only unloading the LP cylinder. The compressor will pump air as soon as it starts with the current setup. with the hp cylinder going to work right away, oil pressure or not. The LP exhaust valve will act like a check valve preventing pressurized air from coming back into the LP cylinder, so the unloader can't dump it to atmosphere.

Conversely, with the hp cylinder unloaded, any air coming from the LP cylinder and intercooler will be exhausted out of the unloader,.

Pressure can flow forward through the pump but not backward.

Two unloaders are necessary for constant run operation. One can do the job in a stop/start configuration. Oddly enough, a single stage machine will always need two unloaders, since they have two separate air paths.

I know absolutely zero about this model. That said, the OP's unloader tower is opposite side of the pulley while my limited searching on Quincy 325 unloader shows the tower is on the pulley side not where the OP's is.

In this video, skip to ~7:34 and watch thru around 12:15
