I am near Bothell, about 30min north of Seattle. If you have a spot to recommend that would be great. I’m not sure what burning varnish smells like, but the smell coming from the motor isn’t something I’ve smelled. So maybe that is what it is.
If you don't have anyone close I would not drive very far. If anyone can resurrect that motor I will be very surprised. Once the windings get burnt it is over. The windings are shorted out to each other and the only saving it is a rewind and I don't think some one will rewind it for what a replacement costs.

OK. No harm no foul. If that motor will run, it is not burned up. If it won't run, throw it away. If it runs, megging it will indicate the degree of leakage. And, it still may be possible to dip it in varnish and bake it for considerably less than a new motor.
