Hello All,
Been lurking & learning for a while, and had this Quincy follow me home yesterday. Have a couple questions I know you guys will have the answer to. First, I am pretty sure that this is a Quincy, but can not find any markings on the thing to prove it. Where should I be looking for labels? Or are there any? I do have a metal tag on compressor head itself stating model number as "325-13" and what I assume is possible a model number of 726527L, but that is all. I don't doubt this is Quincy, but seems odd.
Also has a 5hp "Newman Electric" motor, which looks to be original, but was wondering if this really is the original motor or not. PO stated that this is a 1970 (also on tank label) 325-13 compressor, 5hp, 3ph with 80gal tank. It fired up and ran quite as a mouse. Lots of dirt and oil on it, but should clean up pretty good. PO didn't know a lot about it, but said regular maint. had been done on it by outside contractor, and was routinely bled for moisture. I am sure I will have more questions as I get this baby cleaned up, but this is a project and won't get installed for a few months due to all the summer jobs I have to do. :willy_nil Plan on all new pipe for it, and will of course need regulators and dryers. Will be a big improvement over the one I have now. Any info for this guy would be appreciated
Thanks.
Sorry for bad pics, but I forgot until it was stashed in my waiting room... :lol_hitti

What was the damage total? Those are great compressors, lots of info on other sites and some vids on YouTube on tearing them down and rebuilding. Email Quincy tech support, they are awesome and willing to help out. I have some knowledge, pm me with questions. I recently rebuilt an older 310 Quincy.

Mine is a 1979 and sports the same color paint, later they did go to a more "Royal Blue" color. Quincy offers a great support team and much is available on their website. I did not know anything about mine. After going through their info and looking on the net, everything I could think of was answered. It took about two or three weeks of searching but all was available, these are one of the better air compressors, I am sure you knew before you brought it home. That is how it was for me. After other compressors, I said, I am looking for a used Quincy, got one out of a basement at at large metropolitan police department, was used for the firing range. The thing was pristine,WOW!!!

Good Luck

It's a quincy 325, correct.

Unfortunately, the model and serial tag appears to have fallen off. It was just below the oil dipstick.

The 325 is a very solid, and dependable pump, and puts out upwards of 20CFM, if I remember correctly.
Nice that it still has the finned intercooler tube between low and high cylinders, too. Lots of the older ones are missing that.

Thanks All, I'm looking forward to cleaning him up & getting him piped. Purchased this guy pretty much because of all the info on this board. Also I MUCH prefer old American arn over new overseas imitation! When possible and within reason of course. Most GJ people seem to feel that Quincy is one of the top performers. Both New and Old! I believe mine to be of the 70's era, and having lived thru that period myself, if it is alive and still kicking 40 + years later, then it should be around at least as long as I am... :p

M.Dustin: As for the damage, I don't consider it a U ****, but was not unhappy with the $450 price tag. Couldn't buy much of a new import for same $$. IMHO. I don't' expect it to be virgin, but sure seemed in good shape to me, and even if few parts are needed, I think it will be the last compressor that I will have to buy. Thanks for the offer of help. I will certainly take you up on that as soon as I find out what to ask.

Magoo: Can't say I am a fan of the paint scheme, but at least it has some, and it all matches. What more could one want. (under the layer of oil and curd I think there is some paint!) :dunno: Sure wasn't pristine, (I'm jealous!) but should clean up just fine. Like you, I have been all over the net looking for info, before and after the purchase. Lot out there, just have to dig. There's a LOT right here on this board. Reading here gave me some good pointers on what to look for, and what to check for. Speaking of cleaning him up, what does everyone think of pressure wash the crud off?? After covering electrical and filters of course.
A Pmech: the serial tag is there, just didn't photo well. I will attach pic of it now. Underneath the S/N the tag says: "4 1/2 & 2 1/2 X 3" anyone tell me what this means?? I am thinking Bore & Stroke of pistons??? Also will add motor tag. Do you have an opinion on whether this motor is original to compressor? PO was not sure.

930: it took me a while to figure out that your avatar was not a Quincy. That one was also on my watch list, but the 325 came up first... You seem to have quite a few to choose from.....I am sure I will be asking for your help soon.
Steevo: I was pleased also to see inter-cooler. Even if it is caked with crud, it's there... I can clean it... :p

As I said, I have some more air squeezer studying to do, and then about 5 other tasks to complete and I will be putting the pipe to this bad boy and looking for y'all to help. Know some of you are much more knowledgeable on these than I.
Wanted to say that I emailed Quincy on this squeezer yesterday, and Ashley answered right back offering prints, manuals and help if needed. OUTSTANDING customer service IMHO!!!
Sorry for long post. :eyecrazy:

Ahah! Good, you'll need that when you reference the unit to Quincy. The record of change is #13. An oldie but a goodie. Probably the original motor, but who knows?

4-1/2" and 2-1/2" bores by 3" stroke. :)

Nice find money well spent, they are quality units and it is a wonder they are still in buisness as I doubt they sell many replacemnts due to failures. Great service on the phone is really crazy to find as well, fix her up and let her rip . I run ammsoil 20 weight in my 325 and she seems happier than with sae30.

Thanks O'slick. Good question on the oil type. Hadn't got that far yet. What do I need to use?
Charles, yes I have 3ph. I installed not long ago to run 12" table saw. it is a 7.5 hp unit, and I am anxious to see if it will run the 5hp compressor. Should be alright since the compressor has an unloader. Won't be starting under load anyway. We'll see. Any thoughts?

i,m leery of old compressor tanks. A guy who worked for a farmer about 30 miles from here lost his leg when an old compressor tank ruptured. I dont recall exactly what took place but it was a very serious injury and the guy could of been killed just as easily had he been hit in his vitals.I know this is a rare case but after that I wont buy used unless i could get the tank re-certified cost effectively.
