Yeah if you're under warrenty i'd make darn sure it's normal...given the price of a 5hp running motor. I bought my IR for 100 bucks that had a bad motor, and when i priced motors (after the fact) I was like hrmm maybe this wasn't such a good deal. Luckily i found a good deal on that new baldor (which had a quincy part number). The retail price of a motor that size must make up 50% of the compressor cost on the buyer end.

I just emailed Baldor. Didn't try calling since it's Saturday. I gave a brief explanation of the issue. I also looked up my local Baldor warranty service company given on Baldor's website. I did try calling them, but as expected, closed on Saturday's. I'll give them another call on Monday. Quincy's tech said when he was here that the motor has a two year warranty and he was also going to note the issue if problems should arrise in the future. Seemed like he was saying that if even after the warranty is up it may be a case to make good. I also have email records to Quincy and their local service, with their replies, so I think I'm covered in the future. I've read on other threads that Quincy has a great reputation for correcting issues even after the warranty period is up. We'll see what happens!

Might check out this thread and compare the noise level with a smart phone sound app.

Stainless,

Just found your youtube video on the db level of your Quincy, and yours is identical to mine. Even the sound that I'm hearing. Guess it's normal and I've been making a fuss to Quincy for nothing. I feel much better now! Thanks for posting that video on youtube!!!

or youtube title Comp.avi

Your welcome. Glad I could give you a sense of relief. I too bought mine at Northern Tool around the same time you did. Couldn't pass up the price but it did **** waiting five weeks to receive it.

Out of curiosity, did you check the db with a phone as I did? If so, what were your results?

My son came over and used his smart phone on it about an hour ago. It was like I was watching your video all over again, as the readings were identical to yours. I built a soundproof and exhaust fan ventilated closet around mine early on while I was initially going through all of this dilema, and back and fourth with Quincy's service dept about the motor noise level. With the closet door closed, the db level dropped 20-25 db's. Doesn't sound like that much, but a major difference to my human ear. The closet was a great investment of my time and money!!!

I feel bad now that I bothered Quincy and everyone about all of this. If only there had been a way to hear another just like mine locally, but no one stocks these in my area.

You're right about the waiting time. I received mine exactly 5 days following the manufacturing date on the plate. Six weeks from time of order. I was aware of the time frame when ordering, so I was prepaired for it. Wasn't a problem for me like some of the other reviewers that complained about it.

Thanks again!

So then 230 Volts X 21 Amps = 4830 watts, then devided by 735 equals approx 6.57 hp. If this is the case, then my compressor is underrated at 5 hp rather than overrated. Have I done this correctly?

yes if the world was perfect and the motor was 100% efficent..but of course they are not. most 5hp motors have an actual efficency of 80% (even though the NEMA rating may be 90 or 95% thats efficency compared to a THEORETICAL motor of the same type- if car engines were as efficent as theoretical ones we'd all be getting 100mpg or more..)
so .8 x 6.57 = 5.25hp so im guessing the motor is probably 75%efficient..
