IMG_0216.jpgMy nephew turned on the breakers to the compressor while I was in the middle of a top and rebuild. It really wasn't his fault I should've disabled more. When I went out to the shop this morning to finally put my compressor back together this is what I found I don't know why but it kind of makes me want to cry.( I am unable to post the picture. I don't know why. )

I am 58 years old, have a large family, drive diesel trucks including a Mack, have guns out the wazoo, John Deere tractors, and do one of the hardest most deadliest jobs in America and I have no idea why my compressor makes me want to cry, can't figure that one out .

So the compressor that you were working on had the switch in the on position but the breaker was off? I would like to see a photo for sure.

Wow, that's a shame. There are safety breaker locks which you can buy at Grainger which grip the breaker arm via cam-locking pressure, and then have a hasp for a padlock. Or duct tape and signs, wire tags thru the cross drilled holes.

I'm not sure if parts are available, but you might start the inquiry, that would give you a direction to go: scrap this one and find another candidate to rebuild or get the parts you need.

Yes it was my fault. Yes it was turned off at breaker and on off switch. Yes I could have unplugged it and/or locked the breaker box. But I was out of town and did not know my shop would be used how ever I did have that feeling in my gut that I needed to do more and didn't. My 23 year old Air Force nephew wouldn't tell me he did it.
After a close inspection I think I will buy two pistons and finish my rebuild. Those Quincys are tuff compressors.

Call Spohrer Compressor in Cedar Grove NJ, they have either a rebuilt pump or maybe even used parts. 973-239-3816

I had one in the 40's I had to rap across the knuckles to keep from fikkin with stuff he shouldnt. Open a panel and just start flipping breakers to wonder what happened. (they were all on and working) My Dad was being a nice guy one day while I was out, a laborer wanted to use a welder. Turns him loose and walks away, instead of turning the switch on and sticking a rod in that was laying there got in to the panel. Then they call me up, the well doesn't work, we have no power to outbuildings etc.
The guy must have flipped 20 switches in 2 panels, must have never occurred to him there was a switch on the front of a common red buzzer. Turned the settings on the machine too.

I agree with NUTTSGT , it was an accident , although totally preventable it was a grouping of errors...enough said no one hurt compressor can be rebuilt my problem lies with the 23 year old USAF nephew.........if he did it [I do not know for sure] he is a disgrace to the uniform at that age and that job he should have the integrety and duty to "man up" .......an honest mistake [actually your's not his] but his going there unauthorized or was this common practice does not wipe out the act of lying about it [denile, if he did it] so unless there is another explination he is not worthy of his age or job........Bobbycoke

From here I don't think it will last long just throwing 2 pistons at it. Something else has to be tweaked.

I think this compressor is from the early 60s. It is totally amazing how good the inside condition is and high pressure wrist pin as tight as Brand New those are usually the worst ones . The compressor set outside for more years than I can count. So after running it as is for three months I decided to rebuild the top end because the valves where in pretty bad shape that started the demise of to where I am now I still think it's a great compressor.
They just aren't making young men like they used to but I love my nephew . I will post a picture when I get it back together .

Sorry for your loss. It's a good safety reminder to lock out and tag breakers with a warning. Industrial compressors often don't have an on-off switch. A second means of disconnect near the compressor is a good idea.

That ***** that the nephew doesn't have the spine to fess up to something like this, even if it was an accident on his part.
Thanks for posting a photo of the carnage. Let us know how this compressor story turns out. :)

It looks like it was run on 96% Nitro.

No kidding!

To further discuss the "lockout tagout unplug" idea......think for a minute how things would have gone if he (or whoever) would have turned on the breaker while you were actually working on it....maybe with your hands cleaning the piston skirts? Instead of the broken pistons, we might be talking about the loss of hands or eyes?

Honest mistakes here. Sure you could have done more to disable, but 2 sets of contacts is usually enough. Not your fault or the nephew's.

Only mistake I see here is the nephew not notifying you.

Man, that's tough to even look at through the computer....

Have you figured out why he was randomly flipping on "OFF" breakers and trying to power up the compressor?
