Quincy QT-54 vs QT-5

I'll make this short and quick. Grenaded my old 60 gallon Iron Horse and am buying a new compressor today. Decided to pony up and buy the best available to me. Leaning towards the QT-5 due to less moving parts and slower running speed. Either one will outperform what I had, so volume and output aren't a huge factor.

So, those that know the Quincy line, is there any compelling reason to go for one versus the other when the total price difference will be $550 CAD ($415 USD)?

Compare pump speeds, motor speeds, weight of the system, and others. You get what you pay for and in this case if your running a shop it would be worth it. If your a weekend warrior the cheaper on will probably outlast you.

Personally I would get a second hand QR 325.

As much as I'd like to find a stellar used unit, my options are severely limited in rural Saskatchewan. Quite honestly I was amazed to even find a quincy available.

I'd get the QT-5 between those two.
More included necessary parts and it won't drive you nuts with the racket.

I ended up going with the QT-5. Was late by time I got home and got the bobcat here to unload it. Hopefully get the pallet trimmed down and the motor wired in tomorrow. I'm eager to see how significant the upgrade is from the noisy old Iron Horse.

Read and follow the startup procedure. Most have a free run time before starting to build pressure.

That qt5 will sort you out. If you want to quiet it down a bit, get an intake silencer. Quincy sells them but I think they are made by Universal Silencer. Made a big difference. I put a 90 elbow where the filter was and then have the 15" silencer going vertical with the oem filter housing on top. Works well. Runs at about 83db.

QT-5 seems like the better of the two. And being in rural Saskatchewan I'm guessing there aren't that many other options, although if there are Champion seem to make a nice compressor.

To anyone who has never been to rural Saskatchewan I can only describe it as so flat you can watch your wife leave you for days. I really enjoyed my drive through, the fields are beautiful, but there aren't that many people. You'll be driving past endless fields and hardly see a house. "Oh look, another pump jack!"

I finally had a chance to use it last night doing some sanding on my project truck. Didn't even hear it cut in over the noise of the dual action sander (wearing hearing protection) from 10' away. The cut out is a bit more noticeable.

I'm thinking I'm going to do some upgrading to my air lines for better moisture control this set of days off, my current setup has been pretty pieced together.

That sounds like the views from highways 1 and 16. A lot of the province has a lot more character than that, but our major highways help reinforce the perception.

You can also do a remote air intake, with a section of rubber hose at the pump (to keep vibration from transmitting into the rest of the pipe and whatever it is attached to). That can be easier to do and more cost-effective than buying a silencer.
