We built a SteelMaster quonset back in 1993. It sits 6' off the ground on pilings. Over the years we've had rust issues begin. The rust starts where the walls attach to the base connector. After the rust begins rain is able to get under/through the walls. About 10 years ago we purchased patch panels from SteelMaster and had to cut out the bottom foot of wall(and drywall inside) and replace these pieces. At the time we also sealed the area(not sure of product).
Two days ago we had a strong driving rain and found water had made it into the building. We are not sure how to go about solving the problem. The panels aren't rusted out like before but they are still leaking somehow. My dad is thinking about cutting out wooden rain deflectors. I'm worried they would trap moisture against the corrugations. I'd love to know if anybody else has had this problem, and if so how you solved it.
Here you can see where we've scraped off the sealant to see what is wrong. Also visible is the cut for the patch panels. We're taking delivery of a new quonset hut next week and don't want that one succumbing to the same problem as this one.
