Quonset Shed?

Hello to all, I have just left a 24x36 garage and moved my cars to a 45x70 Quonset shed. Seemed like a good thing at first thought, and it is nice to have the space (and with no posts like a pole building) but I have a few problems. First, it has two sliding barn doors that measure about 22ft wide, 14ft high. They have to go, as they cannot seal out mice or dust. Is anyone else using a quonset and if so have you had a roll up door installed? Any tips or experiences to share? Would like any advice about living with a quonset as I must outfit this building for acceptable work and storage before winter, thanks, Todd C

I'm just thinking you will have to decide what size opening you will want to have, and then frame a new opening in, either with steel or wood..I'm assuming you have a concrete footing / aproach in place ?... and then pay for a new door- the painfull part..

I helped my brother put one of these up a few years ago. Neat little buildings.

Most of the building manufacturers sell "end kits" which would be the easy (but not cheap) route. You can make your own for a lot less, but that's a lot of custom cuts and building. I guess it depends on how much work/money you want to put into it.

Hello Dave, thanks for the input, lets take another step on that. The end kit would probably be the cleanest solution, as it would look "factory" and avoid the tacked on look of homemade framing. Also, my best quote to frame in the opening and install a door was about $3300, too much in my opinion, and time does not permit me to do it myself. My problem is the building is about 30 years old and I cannot positively determine who manufactured it. Do you know how universal an end kit would be or about how much it would cost? Thanks, Todd

Didn't see you were in Decatur. I grew up in Springfield.

I don't know for sure how universal they are, I'm sorry to say. You know, the Illinois State Fair is on right now over in Springfield, and that's where my brother met his manufacturer, and got the deal he did on his. If you have time this week or weekend, you might want to make a trip over there and talk to a manufacturer about it.
