Found a champion r30 locally, not sure if it comes with flywheel or not yet but for 300$, it seems too good to pass up.
Anyone running one? Or have worked on them?

I was looking at one for 150. Think it was an inch smaller than the r30 one but it had the correct bore size.

Yeah. Two grooves.

Found an old Kellogg one that’s a little bit bigger than the r30 oem with 4 grooves in it

Basically whichever one I end up getting will need some minor mill work to make sure the shaft taper will match well enough.

What are you planning to do with the compressor? R-30’s are beasts. I looked at a couple recently and they weren’t very practical for my needs since they really should have a 7.5hp motor to drive them. I love overkill as much as anyone but it would have been a lot of wasted muscle for what I needed.

Sandblast and paint. Turns out it’s not an r30. It’s wayyyyyy older. But in amazing condition considering it’s about 80 years old from everything I’ve found out so far.

I like old machinery, but this sounds like a rathole I wouldn’t want to explore, unless you’re looking for the journey, rather than the destination.

I enjoy the journey. But I did think it was an r30 initially and wasn’t until I got it home I discovered it was way older. But everything I’ve managed to look at seems like it’s in good shape. Someone had been babying this thing. It’ll have a flywheel on Saturday so then I’ll find out if it’s worth it lol

I second the rat hole comment but at least your mind's in the right place. If you want to sandblast and paint entire cars with professional spray guns (SATA, Iwata, Sagola) you need a lot of air and sandblasting requires a shitload of air as well. I get so tired of people coming on this board wanting to sandblast with a Harbor Freight compressor. It ain't going to happen they just aren't big enough and I've got nothing against Harbor Freight compressors.

I have a 71 saylor beall 705 60 gal with a 5hp Baldor I use as my main air compressor and it holds up real well. I only had to do a valve job and clean out the crank case when I got it but it’s definitely a workhorse. I built a massive desiccant dryer and have a kaeser refrigerated dryer inline and several filters. After I picked up the SB (from my employers storage) I fell into several older compressors within a couple weeks and began overhauling them as a hobby. I’ve always loved older machinery. Hoping this one works out so I can keep the sb as a working backup

That’s what I guessed. Restoring old compressors is a hobby for you. That’s great.

Personally I am wondering if I should repower my 3hp Champion VR-15 from a 3hp to a 5hp motor. I think it’s only a motor and drive pulley upgrade, but I just don’t look forward to scrounging parts that “almost” fit. I have this “sub project” on the table for a couple of years now. I just am afraid that this will be a rathole, since I think the compressor dates to the mid fifties, although the actual compressor was supposedly professionally rebuilt. I think I paid $265 for it, maybe eight or ten years ago, so it’s fully earned it’s keep.

I can’t even keep up with the projects on the table already, the ones I am using the compressor for.

I may just opt to buy a new 5 or 7.5 hp Champion to support the shop and blast cabinet.

Edit: the tank is dated 1970, so that’s 55 years old.

Old compressors are fun and addictive. I’ve got a Champion N and S-1 plus a couple Ingersoll T-30’s and a Quincy 216 that I’m working on right now. Wouldn’t mind adding a few more…

Addictive indeed. The legacy compressors like Saylor Beall, Champion, Devilbiss, Quincy, Westinghouse/LeRoi/Dresser, Ingersoll Rand. I've got seven compressors in various states of rebuild atm.
