Found a raccoon Latrobe in my shed attic. Shoot. Raccoon roundworm is concerning.

I finally suited up and got rid of the big stuff. Full face respirator and long gloves. Decon after.

Looking around for how to finish the clean up. Boiling lye? Shirley there are other solutions. I’m not sure I can pull this off. Esp. standing on a ladder.

Propane torch? Would be fun. But not a great idea in this application.

Does anyone know of other options? I’ve got an 8’x8’ area that is pretty bad.

I know a couple in Portland Oregon that lost their little girl because she came in contact with Raccoon ****. The parasite got into her brain, by the time they figured out what the problem was it was too late.

You can also do a search on it.

Well, guess it's time for a new shed. Leaving a 2 gallon gas can in the shed when I burn it to the ground should take care of any parasite, right?

Never liked that shed anyway...

I am a veterinarian that did my senior year case report paper on baylis ascaris [raccoon roundworm]. The case I worked and wrote up involved macaws that were kept in a large cage that previously housed raccoons. Both birds died. Some birds are very susceptible. It is real, but adult humans are very resistant to it. Children that develop it are generally immunodeficient or from a very large exposure, think gross hygiene. Good that you did a thorough clean up. For disinfectant using one cup bleach diluted in a gallon of water would be fine. Spray area and let sit an hour before rinsing. I have lived in rural Iowa most of my life, raccoons are everywhere. When I was a kid it was very common to raise wild taken raccoon kits as a pet, I don't know anyone that wormed them. Even though this condition has been on my radar for over 30 years I have never heard of anyone being affected locally, can't even remember a case in the state. No reason to torch the shed.

Yes, the raccoon roundworm does behave a little differently than other roundworms
