Hi guys.

I bought a live trap last night, and baited it with sardines and he didn’t go in. He saw me bring this out, do you think he’s actually smart enough to stay away from it?

There’s no little ones in the attic. I had a pest control guy up there on Tuesday.

I had a old Raccoon living on top of my garage, right under the tree. Saw him up there one day sleeping. Decided he needed to go, grabbed the .22 and the ladder and snuck up on him then realized he wasn't hurting a thing as long as he stayed out of the garage, he's up there in the summer still, might not make it through winter.

oh yeah.

we have raccoons wandering around here all the time. they come out of the park (which is right down the street.) gangs of two or three, usually.

lady across the street had a little white truck show up at her house a couple times a week with "critter control" painted on the sides.
they came and went for about three months. never did catch one over there.

caught a lot of squirrels and possums with a Havahart. never had a raccoon in one.

there's no little ones in the attic because the females won't throw a litter of kits for another couple months yet.

YMMV

I've caught many *****, possums and one cat in my live traps. I let the cat go, had never seen it in the area. The possums get hauled off across the river. The ***** go to a farmer who takes them to his woods. I killed a skunk once and buried it in the timber. Something dug it up later, and the mixed smell was awful. I had to go rebury it deeper. Seemed like it would smell forever and a day if I didn't.

Live trap, shoot while still in trap, double plastic bag the body, put in your trash can for pick up. Don't even think of releasing the animal in someone else's neighborhood to be someone else's problem.

KEH

Plus one on not dumping your **** problems off on someone else, this includes not dumping them out in the country on someone's farm.

Fur prices have been so low for so long that these critters outnumber the people around here. I catch 20 to 40 every year they are nasty creatures and will destroy your property if you don't fight back.

Another vote for kill it. I've dispatched several with a .22 and a few more by having a local trapper come in with leg traps. He caught one last year, weighed and confirmed, it was 40 pounds. Digging in my compost pile and got caught in a leg trap.

Wait a minute.

You had a pest control 'specialist' out and they didn't do or tell you what to do?

As to 'is a raccoon smart enough to recognize that you set a trap'? YES.

Wire the trap open and put sardines both inside and outside the trap for a couple of nights. Remove the wire and bait again.

He has passed but I had a neighbor who was a mad scientist type. He used to train birds and ***** to operate puzzles. My SIL had a 50 lb raised-from-a-baby pet ****. It was a terrifyingly inappropriate pet on the order of a monkey or a tiger.

They are smart, dangerous destructive pests. Trap and kill.

Captain nailed it. Animals are suspicious of new. New = dangerous.

I say that about people sometimes. They love dumping trash and trespassing on our property.

I've set out 2 traps side by side and will catch one in each trap. I used to put a tin can or plastic bowl at the closed end with food in it. They tear those up like tissue paper. Now, I just set the traps on a sheet of metal, set the traps on it, and pour the dog food in through the top. It sets on the sheet metal. No more dished to worry about.

I recently caught and relocated a **** and a possum. Tuna fish caught the ****, blanket over the trap, loaded in back of the SUV, hauled it down to the river. He ran up the hill then turned to stare at us before going on into the thick woods. The possum went in after some stale corn chips. Same as before, hauled down to the river. This spring I'll relocate the damn groundhogs tunneling under my storage shed.

If you catch a cat then it was where it shouldn't be - just like the raccoon - no difference between them at that point.

Cats are always welcome on my property. They kill mice and don't cause any trouble.

Post 37 shows a raccoon hand trap. What the hell does one then do after it’s caught? I’m sure it is less than happy at that point and can imagine quite a fight.

I have had them in my attic.
You have to kill 3 generations before the memory of the location is lost.
The mother
The kits she raised there.
Their kits.

Otherwise they just keep coming back.

Live trapped a few *****,and Possums here, used hot dogs, tuna,or cherry pie filling. Tried a spring trap once, **** got is arm caught and was pissed. Ended up dragging it outside and running it over with truck to end its misery. Bought the live trap the next day,and I release 7 miles away in a corn field next to a timber. We haven't had any inside critters since the girlfriend moved in with 2 dogs even with a pet door.

A Raccoon may look cute and cuddly, but they are not animals you want to screw around with. They can be very aggressive, they can and will do damage to property, and they can carry diseases that affect people as well as pets. If you have one, or more than one, hanging around causing problems, you really should get rid of it/them as soon as possible. Personally, I would suggest shooting them because then you won't get bit. Shoot them, wear protective gloves when handling them, wrap them in a plastic bag and bury them, preferably at least 3 feet deep. That is my personal opinion, other opinions may vary.

I use marshmallows. I make a trail of them from a few feet outside the trap into and near the trigger. He may be smart but he will eventually go in. The good thing with the marshmallows is you know if they're being eaten and can adjust trigger mechanism if you ain't catching any *****.

Raccoon **** carries some serious germs. We had to collect scats for wildlife management class, and they told the students not to collect raccoon scats for that reason. Too dangerous to mess with.

I think any SOB who catch and releases a raccoon is probably the same worthless ************* who dumps unwanted dogs and cats out in the country. Dont you people have guns, animal control, vets or dog pounds? It is wrong to teach vermin to be a bigger pest and not fear humans. But to dump the problem on someone else's doorstep is just worse.

But, I think any leg hold trap is just mean. I ran my traps twice a day minimum and I still saw chewed off limbs. Its just cruel. I'd rather see baby seals clubbed than leg holds used.

You have all heard the stories about dogs finding their way home across hundreds of miles?

Raccoons are smarter than dogs.

If you "relocate" them and they think the old home (yours) was better they will return.

They can do some serious damage, the property with the old farmhouse I bought, came with about a dozen of them, they had been there a long time (House had been empty about 10 years), the attic was full of feces and a very bad urine smell, after trapping quite a few, I was taking them to some wooded property my buddy had about 4 miles down the road, I wouldn't swear to it, but I might have trapped the same one a couple of times. After I decided to tear the house down, I let them have run of the place, we were just using the house for storage and I had to have the house there to build my barn. I tore it down a year ago. I would check all around your house and make sure there is no where they can get in, good luck!!

Releasing a **** in a strange place this time of year might as well be a slow death sentence. Its cold it has no knowledge of food sources. It has no claimed territory. It will most likely survive but will not have a easily time of it.

Put eviction notice at raccoons point of entry. Racoons have only started to show up in my area the past 20 years. If you have a sight hound like Jazz you won’t have varmits

I guess I'll join the chorus, though I don't think the OP ever updated.

I've had two different raccoons take up residence in my attic. One was a big boar and the other a female which had kits.

What they do to an attic is impressive to say the least. And as said they carry every disease and parasite out there.

The first time it happened I called the county. They told me in no uncertain terms not to release it. Either kill it myself or call them and they would come get it and destroy it. Once a '**** figures out a house is a nice place to live they WILL find another if they can't get back to yours.

I used a hav-a-hart type trap on the roof. I mounted it on a piece of plywood so that the '**** could not tear up the roof. My old K22 made quick work of it.

I'm a lifelong hunter and get no pleasure out of just killing something, but it's the best thing to do.

I take it you do not have skunks. I believe all varmint should die of lead poisoning. Especially skunk.

Yes we have “black and white kitties”. Only once but all 3 dogs got sprayed and midnight I was up and giving them all a bath.

It always happens at midnight...On that last 'going out' before bed. Dawn then baking soda then doggy shampoo for the fur conditioner is my remedy. Works extremely well.
