hello all. I have been checking out all of your crazy garages and im thinking about doing up my little single. I have bought all of my lights, some paint ect... but im thinking about adding some flooring.
race deck is really nice, but I don't think I can afford it. is there something a little cheaper that can give me a similar look. my sister in law works at sears and gets some kind of discount. do they carry anything?
mostly looking to do a simple black and grey pattern. thanks

I don't know why people don't do more VAT which stands for vinyl asbestos tile. Of course the asbestos has been replaced with an alternate material. Today you buy VCT, or vinyl composition tile. Like this:

VCT Tile is something that has gotten a lot of discussion in this forum. For many consumers it is an inexpensive alternative to products typically used on a garage floor. There are MANY people in this forum who have had great experiences with the product. We decided as a company not to offer VCT tile for garage application for the following reasons:

  • According to Armstrong it did not meet the code approvals required.
  • According to Armstrong the adhesive and the tile might have substantial difficulty with freeze thaw applications.
  • According to Armstrong it was not the intended application for the product.

The key is we decided not to sell it. This does not mean it can't be used. As a 'Garage Flooring' company we felt we would be implying it is a good fit which would contradict the manufacturers recommendations. That does not mean the product will or won't work for your specific application.

At $2.55 a square foot, I would think you could almost get some sort of interlocking tile, as opposed to the peal and stick.

Sears is selling interlocking tiles for $110.00 for 40 square feet. That comes out to be right around $2.75 a square foot.

While price is important it's not #1.

I've been reading about every type of floor product and each one has pros/cons associated with it.

OK guys, my eyes are bleeding from all the research and reading over the last few days on which floor I should go with.

What are your thoughts on this type of peel and stick?

Thanks

The peel and stick are a great option under the right circumstances. you MUST prime the floor first, and you need a floor that is in relatively good condition. Same basic material as a product like TrueLock PVC just thinner and self adhesive.

With ALL pvc products we suggest some stain blocking. Either a permanent top coat or sacrificial mop on type finish

My concrete floor is just over 1 year old, in great shape. I also planned on putting down Behr primer if I go with the peel and stick. My main concern with peel and stick is movement and then you have spaces between the tiles.

I also considered a tile like race deck, but concerned about the click clack noise.

Either way, I was also concerned about marks caused by the heat of the tires and for that reason not going with epoxy.

The correct primer would be the Behr 880 and it works great. It sounds like your floor would be the perfect candidate for for the self stick tiles. We do NOT suggest leaving any space between the tiles. When properly installed there is little if any movement.

Hard plastic tiles can have the noise you mentioned, but it is easily resolved by using landscape fabric as an underlayment. PVC tiles do not have that issue.

ANY PVC product, including G-Floor PVC products can stain from certain tires. Strategic placement of black tiles helps a lot. If you are going with a lighter color, the use of their G-Floor top coat is idea. I just posted a quick video about it for you here: http://www.garageflooringllc.com/2014/01/21/g-floor-top-coat/

I hadn't plan on leaving spaces, as I mentioned it could happen and saw someone post that on another thread.

The landscape fabric is a good idea, but that will absorb water and then you could have a mold/smell problem.

Unfort the PVC tiles are not in my budget.

So, right now it looks like I'm leaning towards the peel and stick.

Thanks for the video.

Give us a call on either and we can help you out. TrueLock PVC in Black or Gray is only $3.45/sf

I have VCT. I did it when I bought my house two years ago. You can see details on my 20X20 sigline. I like it for the price, but for a few dollars more, and I mean less than $100, I could have had porcelain tile, which is what I would do now!

Put these BLT self stick tiles in 2 years ago and very happy with them. No gaps during installation and they stay where they're put. Used Henry's 336 Bond Enhancer Self Stick Primer bought at Lowes or HD. Swept and cleaned floor with damp towels to remove dust and then applied Henry's primer with paint roller. Let dry for a day or two then start sticking. Snap a center line on floor to make sure to keep tiles square. You can trim edges and where needed with utility knife.

Here's a more recent pic of tiles in my garage. Recently purchased BLT tiles to finish the rest of the garage in the foreground.

I have been looking into a vinyl tile for my garage .Checked out the non stick brand name type and. Based on there testing for. Heavy loads and chemicals spills , they would stand up very well in a garage,
The thing that I really like is if you do damage one or two of them ,you can remove those tiles and replace easily .
Am I missing something I should consider ?

Well, it's been a few weeks...alot more research and I've received some samples of different tile floors.

While there are pros and cons on all floors I feel the best tile for me would be the peel and stick. I've also found them for about $2.09 a sq ft and looking forward to the Spring to complete this project.

Once done I will post pics.

One good thing about interlocking tile is that if price is a concern, you can start with a parking pad (less $$$) and then expand when you can afford more tile. With other kinds of tile or floor apps, you have to get the job done all at once.

I have felt the OP's pain and challenged myself to answer the question: How can I get the best interlocking tile floor for the least amount of money? I singled out Gladiator and Racedeck tiles as my primary choice.

I looked at several sources for Gladiator tile all around the country, and by the time I finish I will have spent around $650 for a $15-1700 floor, and am managing the whole project for about $1.50 a tile or less. Here's what Ive been up to. Its been crazy and is taking several months, looking at the internet almost every day and getting lucky every now and then. I am SO CLOSE to being done.

http://matthewsgarage.blogspot.com/2014/01/garage-tile-score-so-far.html

I have just added some Gladiator Drain tile/Free flow that was on sale at ABT.com:

http://matthewsgarage.blogspot.com/2014/02/gladiator-drain-tile-free-flow-10-for-4.html

Costco also sells Motofloor tile too at a decent price, around $2+ or so a tile; you will have to wait for a sale (about 2-3 times a year) for it to go down to $109 for 48 tiles.

Although my final choice was interlocking tile, I got a few samples of peel and stick tile from Justin at Garageflooring and tried it out. Its been almost a year and sample tiles are still in my garage. Very impressed; they definately stay in place and do not move and look just as good (if not better) than PVC tile. It takes some effort to pull it from the floor for removal, and there is sticky residue left behind. I like it, and would recommend looking into.

Double ouch!

Walmart just raised their price to $126 a box.

Better buy it now at Sams Club before they raise their prices. Just wish I didn't have to pay $175 for shipping.

Anyone know of a free shipping code for Sam's Club that I haven't been able to find?
