I am installing race deck this week and have a 40 gallon water heater on a stand in the corner. What is the best way to lift this. I was thinking a floor jack but I don't have one of those. My plan is to drain the heater and just try and pick it up myself with brute force and move it, put down the race deck and hope it is fine. Unfortunately I don't know how much give my plumbing has. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome aboard!

What is the stand made of? Wood with 4 legs? Can you trim one leg at a time with an oscillating multitool and slip the race deck under it?

Remember to denergize the water heater (if electric) before draining or you will toast the elements.

Is the water heater done with rigid copper lines or flexible braided hose? If rigid, I would not just try to 'lift' it with the lines in place, you're asking for trouble. Take the time to unhook the lines, drain the tank and do it right. Chances are it needs flushed anyway and it is a perfect time to replace your sacrificial anode rod while you're at it. You get a new floor and a fresh service on the water heater all at once.

Just go around it and leave a couple tiles tucked behind so you can swap them out when the water heater is changed out. Then throw them away after it gets swapped and you've long forgotten about this

unless everything is on flexible connections, I would leave it alone , and go around it as tight as you can. being patient and take your time you can get damn close . then save some tile to lay when you replace the heater, and then set it on a drip pan
