Racedeck - Question

Hello,

Closing on my first house in two weeks and am excited to finally have a 2.5 car garage/workshop. I've decided I'm going to go with Racedeck Free Flow flooring, but am not sure what to do about the back portion of the garage. As you can see in the attached pic, the back quarter of the garage has a raised ledge (~2 to 3 inches) that extends about 4.5 feet from the wall.

I am going to install a workbench, cabinets, and air compressor in the raised section, but wasn't sure whether it would be good to go with Racedeck there as well given all the heavy stuff to be placed or if I should paint the concrete, do carpet, or some other option for the "work" area?

Good decision to go with the RaceDeck. I just put mine in about 2 weeks ago and I love it. The RaceDeck will support any of your heavy items. My suggestion is to do the whole floor in RaceDeck and you can paint the face of the raised section to match the RaceDeck.

I think painting the face of the step may be the best bet both from ease and looking cleanest

Agree, when we sell our SupraTile and there are unusual areas, steps, verticals, etc, we tell our customers to take a tile to a local paint store and have them tint up a good acrylic enamel to get close to your tile color and just paint the surfaces. Verticals and such see no traffic, so no need for an epoxy or super high performance paint.

Thanks for the input everybody. Looks like I will do tile on both levels and paint the edge.

On a related note, do they still sell the RaceDeck edging that comes in yellow? Didn't see it on the site, but was thinking to do a bright color at the edge of the step for contrast.

I would put the Freeflow on the raised portion and then use yellow edging to the lip, and maybe paint the face of the lip black. When I put my freeflow down 2 years ago yellow edging was available.

I would agree. You could likely get away with an inexpensive concrete paint. If you want a high end solution you could use Rust Bullet on the face and even finish it with high gloss black that they offer.

One other note, you should check and see if a sealer has been put on the floor. Free Flow is beautiful, but it is not going to protect the floor from Freeze Thaw and damage from moisture and contaminants. Use of a product like TrueLock B4 or a densifier and waterproofer is highly effective in protecting the concrete substrate -- and very inexpensive.
