RaceDeck Temperature Installation

Does anyone have experience in laying RaceDeck in the Winter Months in the Midwest?


I'm in Michigan, and will have insulation added to my garage in the coming weeks, but still have a few more things to complete before I can install the flooring. If I'm being realistic - it may not be until November / December that I'll be ready for RaceDeck. The Garage will be insulated, but not fully heated until next year and the idea of leaving a patio heater or similar out there to run overnight is less than comforting.

I've heard that ideally you want to lay this in the warm months and allow it 24 hours to acclimate, but I'd really like to keep this project going through the winter.

Any thoughts from anyone that has done this before?

I can't speak for Racedeck but I did install an interlocking floor from bigfloors.com. It's my understanding that both products are made in the same factory.
I installed mine in the winter but had a heater going. with the door closed there is no noticeable expanding/buckling in the warmer months...but when the door is open in the warm sun, the tile does expand and raise up/buckle. I left almost a full inch of space around the perimeter but it still expands. I dont think there's any way around it, it's plastic. Perhaps Racedeck uses a different formula that doesn't expand as much. I know a few people who have had similar issues. I had put down landscape fabric as an underlayment and I think that could be part of the issue because as the time expands, the bottom of the tile gets snagged on the fabric and lifts up, rather than expanding flat.

Garage Floor Tiles can absolutely be installed in winter months.

DO NOT use anything other than feet or hands to snap cold tiles together
Put the tiles in the sun. If you dont have sun put the tiles in the house
Leave a full 1/2" all the way around and at any obstacles including the garage door and track

Thank you Justin. Generally speaking, 1 day is sufficient time for them to acclimate and then just move them to the garage for installation - correct?
