Ordered and received Racedeck with the 3 inch black transition pieces for my garage door opening and I ran into an issue that I hadn't considered when I did my layout pattern on RaceDeck's website.

The issue is the 3 inch transition pieces. If you use them, then your tiles outside of the transition tiles won't match up - well, they will, but you would have to move them 3.5 inches away from the wall to match them up and that blows my pattern.

I called and discussed this with them. I can either purchase more tiles, cut them and fit them accordingly or purchase more transition pieces that will match the other transition pieces.

Last option is just to remove the transition pieces all together. If I would have known this upfront I might have just not bought the transition pieces to begin with.

I can't be the only one that has experienced this. Anyone else?

OK, I think I've got it figured out. I am going to have to cut the row of tiles that will lay against the back wall 3-3.5 inches anyway to allow for the transition pieces to lay in front of the garage door. This should give me the extra pieces necessary to fill in at the front part of the garage without having to purchase more tiles.

Still I would like to know how others are doing it..

On my garage, I have full width pieces starting at the wall opposite the big door. The full width pieces end about 4" before the door. I used transition pieces for the width of the big door. They end about 1" shy of the door. On either side of that door I used cutdown pieces of about 4.5".

If I start with full width pieces at the back wall, I will end up with a full piece (12x12) at the garage door. Just about perfect. But to use the transition pieces, I will have to cut the ones at the back wall to make it work. The decision is to either cut the back wall ones and use the transition pieces or not cut and leave off the transition pieces.

I just love making decisions

I did it essentially as you described.

Danieldd,
In your picture, did you cut the blue tile that close around the door track or did you trim the door track up allowing the tile to slide beneath it?

The latter. Used my Dremel to cut off the bottom of the door track so the tile can easily slide underneath.

Any chance you can post couple of pictures to show us how it came out as getting ready to lay my tile and want to make sure I understand what you did.

for a very clean look, you can cut off about 3/4" of the garage door rail track and slide the floor under. This will not effect the door function as the wheels in the track do not go this low.

I installed mine so that the black transition pieces are actually under the overhead door and are sticking a little bit outside the door. The overhead door closes just fine on top of the tiles and in some respects I think it works better that way than to have the transition tiles end inside the garage.

Would love to accommodate you but I am waiting for the weather to warm up a bit first. Plus I've somehow got to coordinate getting everything out of the garage (including a dead vehicle) before I can begin.

At the very least, I was trying to anticipate how it would look before actually getting started. As mentioned earlier, my solution will be to cut all the back wall tiles so that the garage transition pieces lay right at the inner lip of the garage door seal. The left over back wall tile cuttings will be used for those areas to the left and the right of the garage door to fill in the appropriate areas correctly.

Here is how mine ended up.

Thanks Jamie, thinking I'll do as you did in your picture. I have a rubber threshold affixed to the floor which is set so the door closes directly on top of it to provide a very nice weather/waterproof seal. I'll run my edging tiles just shy of the inside edge of the overhead door as I think that may provide a clean look.
May also wait another month till the weather warms up like Daniel.......have 18 boxes of RD sitting in the garage for the past 5 years waiting to be installed so what's another month:dunno:

When I ran into this issue I just notched the transition piece to fit around the door track. I used a razor blade to do this, cut it about 2.5 inches deep and 1 inch wide for extra spacing. I found it to be easier that cutting tiles or having a large area of exposed concrete between the door tracks.
