RaceDeck Under Layment

I've decided on doing RaceDeck on my Garage Floor on my new house. I'm thinking of underlayment to mitigate some of the noise. I live in S. FL, so snow and water won't be much of an issue unless there's a Hurricane and then my RaceDeck would be washed out to sea!

For those who did underlayment:

What did you use?

Where did you get it?

How much was it?

Would you use it again?

Its NOT very noisy at all, hard for you to do all the way in Fl. but come out to my place and walk on my floor, its not bad and it does not need underlayment.

Plus, I would be more worried about the underlayment holding on to moisture or some spillage and starting to stink over time.

I'm not sure how much, if anything, underlayment will do in helping to reduce the noise.

I also have a sample tile and placed it on my epoxy covered garage floor. To me it sounds the same as walking on pergo flooring. Sort of a hollowed out sound vs. walking on actual hardwood floors.

Since the RaceDeck tiles are designed as suspended tiles (ridged support that allows air circulation and possible fluid run off, underneath), I guess an underlayment may prevent echo from bouncing off the cement garage floor, however I doubt it would make much of a difference since the tile surface is still suspended.

I also live in Florida and suggest hitting a hardware box store or wholesale carpet provider for ideas on what's best. Perhaps they have a product designed for pergo floors that could also be used under the RaceDeck.

I recently installed Racedeck and put an underlayment down in just the high traffic areas. With nothing in the garage I could definetly hear the difference where there was underlayment and where there wasn't. I don't park daily drivers in this garage so moisture isn't a issue. Got it at HD, 4' x 25' roll for $25, used 4 rolls, my garage is 24' x 32'.......I would do it again.

However, since I was paying for a premium floor covering I figured it was worth the extra $25. It took about 5 minutes to roll out the whole garage. Just installed the Racedeck over it without any issues.

I've only had my Racedeck down for about a month but I love it. No noise issues whatsoever.

Wish I would have laid something under mine. With three people walking through my garage... it sounds like a team of Clydesdale's came through the door! The normal sounds like conversation is also louder BUT the acoustics are amazing with my new surround sound system... just ask my neighbors

If you really are concerned about sound,use synthetic landscape felt ,either the entire floor ( overkill imo) or just where you the foot traffic is. This material is cheap, breaths and easily available

I've also found the type of underlayment that RaceDeck1 suggests at Costco. A $35 roll will fit my entire 21' x 23' garage. I'm looking forward to laying down some racedeck as soon as I can get everything cleaned out!

I'm going with an Underlayment. I found some 5oz Landscape Felt as suggested. Will be doing CircleTrack as the pattern with a smattering of FreeFlow. I have 3 of the tiles and they seriously "clack" when you move over them. But just put some fabric under them and they quiet right down.

My biggest reasons for using Racedeck:
1) I can't screw it up like Epoxy
2) I can take my investment with me if I move
3) Can be easily repiared
4) 15 Year warranty from a long standing Company that cares about it's reputation with as far as I can tell no nightmare cases of failure.

If it gets scratches or buff marks, I could care less, it's a floor. I think if I had epoxy, I would be depressed and freaked.

One more point I forgot to mention up there. Nothing wears my legs out like walking around Sam's wharehouse! I think Epoxy would give me that effect. The Racedeck is a little "springy", that's got to help on leg fatigue.

Reviving an old thread. Does Shock tower help with noise by chance as well from people's experience? I'm thinking of adding those especially if they help with noise and shock at the same time and save money on the under sheeting... thoughts? Thanks!

I had it for several years in our garage/car-port and the noise from it was my biggest complaint. The other irritating thing was when I brought my car down from the floor jack and the front wheels being to touch the floor, the grip from the tires and the wheels wanting to spread back out would buckle the tile up. So I had to put flat pieces of plywood to allow the wheels to not grab the Racedeck. I hope that makes sense.

Other than that, the floor was tough as nails, cleaned up easy and really protected the floor. When I removed it though, it was so nasty underneath from dust/dirt getting under and whatever liquid spills would seep through.

Had one garage bay in racedeck with no underlayment. "Clickety clack". Not a huge deal but it's noticeable.
I did another bay with landscape felt underneath. Honestly, not that different, maybe 30% less noise...
I then experimented with the thin rubbery underlayment you put under laminate flooring. Not cheap. That really made a difference in noise and feel too - bit of a cushion effect, but it would probably trap water/oil, spills...

Clickety-clack it is... Next time I will do nothing.

I will make the same offer I did 5 years ago in this thread and I see you are in California Come on by and walk on my floor if you want and see (hear) for yourself how it sounds with no underlayment

We carry a porous crumb rubber that is about 1/8" thick. Water and moisture will go right through it so its breathable. It's great as an underlayment for tiles. We use it on our carpet deck tiles when being used on a tar roof so the pins under the plastic trays don't damage the roof. It's also used as an underlayment for our Supratile where more cushion is desired for trade shows and such.

We have also had many customers use it on Racedeck type tiles or any hollow type tile to quiet down the surface.

Check my posts. I was very happy with the stuff I got on Amazon. It was easy to work with but thicker than the cheap stuff in stores.
