Racing lawn mower?

I was recently given an older (25-30 years old i guess) Murry with a 9 hp briggs on it. I am perfectly content push-mowing my small yard, but thought this might make a hilarious project before I get crazy and start the motorized bar stool build later in life. Anybody involved with racing these thing? I've been through the standard google search full of links, but if you've got a favorite site, let me know! Just looking for personal advice and experiences.

Thanks,

Red

yank out thal old small block and drop one of those big block 16 HP units in there and you should be set.
you can mow your yard faster and have more time to play in the garage

I too would love to get into this. It looks cool. From what I can tell, one of the first things is change the size of the pullies.

I know just what ya mean, I have been giving some serious consideration to to soupin up the old horse here and turnin her into either a puller, or a first rate draggin wagon!

Something tells me I would be better suited to tractor pulling (being in the true redneck spirit and all!)

UB, is that an old Wheel Horse? Man that baby is in pristine shape! Be a pity to mess it up. How about some more shots of her and a run down of her vital statistics?

Yup, 1963 633 that was a pile of rust with a rear end filled with water when I drug it home. It has a Kohler 7hp engine that I rebuilt and did it right, new rings, ground the valves and seats, honed the cylinder because that was all it needed. I am still not entirely done with it. I need to buy new reproduction WH decals, new throttle and choke cables, and I still need to figure out what I am missing in the way of my conversion from a pull start to a key start. Actually I know what it is missing, I just have to make it happen.

To really make it pop I plan on putting bar lugs on the back, and ag style 3 rib tires on the front. To really finish it off I will then then need to make a farm tractor style exhaust stack complete with muffler and the lid or cap like the big boys have.

I don't use it to mow though I do have the deck and a WH snow plow for it. I have two more WH tractors, a 1968 Lawn ranger, and an even older Suburban, more commonly known as a nut roaster due to the engines position. the latter is still all rust as I have not even gotten to do anything to it yet. The only other attachment I have is a 4 wheel wagon I tow my kids around the neighborhood 4th of July parade in. I only have one more pic of this tractor, or any of my horses for that matter, and it follows. Actually it is more a pic of the wagon than the tractor.

All I know about it is that it looks like one of those things that can get addictive.

Around here there seems to be both an oval track and a drag racing group.

A local biker bar has a big back yard where once a year they hold lawnmower drags,
This event is pretty laid back rule wise.
Some guys just bring their yard machines for this once a year race but others have true dragsters with snowmobile engines that they tow around a circuit of some kind.

Before I spent any money I would check out the local scene and see if it is something you would want to be involved with.

Bunch of friends decided to build their own track and have a lil race...had a bunch of racers from a league come up and few of them were mad as hell cause my buds were kicking their butts on mowers that they had $200 in and the racers one guy had almost $5k. its a wild time and fun.
