Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Nice and clean, but functional at the same time. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the comment. My goal is to have it look good and work for me. So far, so good. I want to get another wheel set up, but I'm running out of wall space.

I want to do something in the main garage too, but need something that can resist welding/grinding spatter too
I can see why that would be a tall order. I'm not so sure RaceDeck offers any product that can stand up to that kind of heavy use. Although, you do see photos on the RaceDeck FB page and website of people using their products in industrial applications. I would be worried about the longevity of porcelain tiles, just with all the temperature fluctuations.

I'd go with the free flow stuff like yours since there is a floor drain in there to take the runoff.
One regret I have is that I didn't do a floor drain. I didn't actually see me going this far with the garage, but had I known I may have paid a bit more for one. My plans were to have it drywalled, taped, and painted. It just kind of took on a life of its own after that.

No temperature fluctuations in my garage. The radiant floor heat system makes sure of that. It would be easily handled though by using an isolation membrane like Schluter Ditra.

Radiant floor sounds dreamy! I need to check your build out in more detail. I only recently became aware of it. Does your wife park in the new stall? If so, does she pull it up on the lift each and every time? My wife would freak out about that.

The wifes car parks in the new addition ,but under the lift. My 79 Mustang shell is up top. She was freaking a bit about parking under the lift at first, mostly she was worried about the clearance on the sides to the colums. That's one of the main reasons I went with the BendPak as it has a wider stance than many of the home use lifts.

Nice work! The graphite colour in the middle is subtle but adds a lot of class, don't you think? I love what you have going on in your space. I am hopping over to your thread. Can't wait to see it once it's all tidied up.

Rick. I am just in the beginning of building a detached 24 x 28. Sometimes I am kind of blunt with my way of wording things so here goes, you rock! What a beautiful shop and the attention to detail is terrific!

I too suffer from ocd but don't know that I will ever be able to get my shop to the state yours is in. What a great job. You are to be commended!

Thanks for the compliment Coleman. I'm sure with some hard work and determination, you too can become as obsessed with details as me! Let me know when you start a build thread because I'd be interested to follow it. Thanks, again.

Beautiful space - I think we all appreciate the work you've put into designing and building it.

How do you like your radiant tube heater? I'm curious to know if it's vented. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks very much. I absolutely love my radiant tube. It is vented through the back wall to the outside. I should snap a pic of that at some point for anyone curious to see. It does a great job of keeping everyTHING warm in the garage. It takes up quite a bit of space, but very worth it. The garage can be reheated in a few minutes after the big door opens and closes.

Great work, Rick. Do you remember where you got the spray bottle bar, by chance?

Very nice, we will have to have beers one day in each others shop.... well when I get mine done!

Sounds good. I think we could get quite a few together judging from the amount of Calgarians/Albertans on this board.

To be honest, I just walked into the local home store and picked up a swatch of greys and picked a few tones. I have some leftover kicking around somewhere, but I can't recall the name off-hand. I have a feeling my "TV Wall" may be just a bit darker than the colour you have. I've enjoyed watching your progress.

All of my black/grey storage is Craftsman MD. I happened to purchase it all at 50% off a few years ago. The box is more recent.

I think some of it is on sale now (in Canada). Not sure about the US.

Good luck with the schooling. I hadn't had my own garage space until this house. I had lived overseas for many years, but finally getting a garage was one of the best perks about settling back in Calgary. It is a definite plus to life in this climate!

I kind of did that at one point, but I didn't really like it. It also made fetching the vacuum a bit of a chore.

Tools? What are those?

I have a few Suncast storage sheds along the side that house all my brooms, ladders, and hoses, etc. You know the only tools I need are a chamois and a vacuum cleaner...c'mon now.

You mean the AUdi NEVER needs fixin'? I'm sure the car jack and impact wrench needs to be stored SOMEWHERE? Perhaps in a clinical ISO-certified toolbox?

I did just get a 2' Snap-On breaker bar today. All of that good stuff is in the red rolling box. The jack is housed neatly under the stairs, and all my other tools are in the various Craftsman cabinets. I'll snap a few pics. Why not?

Not sure you'd want to risk bringing any of those Texas beauties up here. You'd need more than a detailing by the time you arrived! I'll come to you.

How hard they to get loose the full length? And are the tiles see through? I'm thinking they are. I like the looks of your floor though.

What would be great, and if a Racedeck rep is seeing this, a flexible strip, maybe 2" wide, that you could pull to unlock a complete row of tiles. It would be solid, but come in different colors to coordinate with the floor tiles. That way, you grab one end and just start pulling it up, slide the tiles out to wash them and the floor, then slide them back in and put the zip strip back down to lock them in.

Thanks, Kevin. I am pretty happy with how that "media wall" turned out. One of the better design decisions I have made.

It is actually quite easy to separate full lengths of the tiles. I use a narrow flathead to pry up the locks on one or two tiles and then just "reef" on the line and they let go very nicely. Yes, the tiles are see through.

I can see where you are coming from, but truth be told, I end up ripping up a variety of sections for different reasons. For instance, when I installed my winter wheels, I ended up ripping up a 4' x 10' rectangular section. Sometimes, I don't drag the entire floor out to clean the concrete, so having a dedicated "rip strip" probably wouldn't be that useful in my case. I can't complain about the process of separating tiles since RaceDeck has ensured that fastening and unfastening of their tiles is quite easy.

Very, very nice garage. Tasteful and super clean. Cleaning those tiles looks like a lot of work though. A lot of members here seem to have them in their garages, they do look cool though.
