Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Love this garage!
It helps that I'm a Audi/VW guy.

If I had to choose a car manufacturer based purely on garage-design-potential, it would have to be Audi. There's a lot you can do from a design standpoint with the colors and logo.

I actually prefer the look without the emitter guard. It is more of a clean streamlined look that fits the garage without it.

I totally see your point. Plus, the emitter might make the heater look lower to the eye. It's something I will kick around in my mind, but I doubt I ever spring for it.

What I want to know is if you have already starting fitting out your little guy with his own detailing station for his rides? lol

So far, he has his little broom hanging next to the garbage can for "detaling" his police car and little green car. He definitely inherited my need for neatness.

Nice work!

Thanks. I wouldn't really say it was a lot of "'work" per se. When I see what true work some guys put into bringing their garages to life, I feel humbled.

Looks like a great helper you have there.

He's the best.

Gotta love the quick clean up on that flooring. I do a quick shop vac, then mop and in no time at all its back to show quality :)

EDIT: I just noticed your little guy was actually amongst his "stuff" haha. Where's waldo lol..

We will soon be adding a bicycle to his collection, so something's got to give!

Cook pic of your son mopping. I laughed, because I was mopping my floor the other day when my son wanted to help me. I snapped a picture of him as well.

He derives more pleasure from the garage than I do (some days!)

Thanks for the comments and feedback everyone.

this may be my favorite garage on this forum

I appreciate that. Thanks.

'Then' looked good but 'Now' looks so much better!

Thanks guys. It's fun to see the difference over time. The garages on GJ keep me pushing!

Rapid detailer, Tyre dressing, and a plastic rejuvenator. Good stuff. CT did a good thing by signing up Auto Glym.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Do you have a return about those floor tiles ?

What about when the car is wet ? and to clean them ?

Thanks

I'm not 100% sure I understand your questions, but I think you are wondering about water drainage. This floor is excellent for use in areas that get wet. The tiles allow for quick drainage of water. If I am using a hose in the garage, the floor remains virtually dry. Water accumulates below the tile and the slope of my concrete pad pushes the water out the car door.

When I pull a wet car into the garage, the floor allows for all the moisture to drip under the tiles leaving a dry surface for me to work/walk on.

Honestly, it is a great option for wet conditions, but be sure to check out my previous posts that cover the maintenance involved with keeping it clean. There's a bit of work involved, especially in the winter months.

I haven't been back to your awesome thread for a while - but it's still inspiring me to spruce up my 2-car attached!

Being in Calgary, you must get the same dirty snow, dripping salt, mud and **** we do. I use those garage-mats to contain it all and keep (most of )it off the floor. Does the RaceDeck contain it at all, or does it just fall onto the floor underneath? I see the pics of you cleaning it out ut couldn't tell if there's a tray or anything under it.

Wow, that's a great question. I don't think I've based my garage on any specific garages, but I've definitely borrowed elements from a number of them. Most recently, EMC2's triple pushed me in a direction to simplify my overall design. The aluminum letters are one of my favorite changes made since finding this forum. The Red Room is probably my favorite garage at this moment. I love the color combinations used in that one. Basically, I spend a lot of my time cruising the "Let's see some 2-car garages" thread. What impresses me the most is the attention to detail paid by new and old members. I look to many single car owners for inspiration in terms of maximizing my space. Dubber, Derrickwade, Allinon, 93Toy, and others inspire me to make every inch of my garage work for me. Nico's 20x20 detailing garage is one I've been watching closely too, because he is on track to creating a perfect car detailing utopia and I'm sure I'll be borrowing from his bank of ideas in the very near future.

Looking realllyy good Rick!

Hi Nico, the bar you see is from Ikea. I added a wooden spacer to bring it out from the wall an extra inch. Here's the link:

The RaceDeck Free Flow tiles do not have a "tray", but they do keep the debris from spreading once it drains through the tiles to the floor. The 1' x 1' tiles contain the mud, so it settles, but there is enough clearance between the tiles and floor to allow water to freely flow under foot. I'm making them sound like magic, but they basically become a modular set of grills. What is amazing about the design is, I could hose down my entire floor, but in a matter of seconds I could run a paper towel across the floor and it would be dry. The curved profile of each "rib" means the water can't do anything except flow through to the floor.

that was exactly what I want to know. Thanks  ... and sorry for the poor formulation of my questions :dunno:

Keep the tiles clean isn't such a big deal, but there is some effort required to unfasten the tiles and rinse the floor underneath. The more mess you drag into the garage, the more often you will find yourself going through the process I outlined earlier in my thread. I have survived three Canadian winters and I feel like my floor still looks brand new. It can be done, but it does take a certain level of commitment to achieve the clean look I've been able to maintain.

I think I agree with you! Definitely my dream garage. I'm also a VW/Audi guy so the theme is very tasteful to me.

Glad to hear there are people who are digging my esthetic. I never really set out with a plan, but it has come together quite nicely. Especially over the past year. Thanks for noticing.

Thanks, man. I wonder what this summer has in store for me and my garage. I'll soon have a couple of months to putter around in there. #lifeofateacher

Rick-

Any issues with humidity in your garage? Mine is so well insulated and tight that if I pull in a hot car with snow/wet the humidity and heat levels go up. I had to install a de-humidifier to keep it under control.

My garage is well insulated and sealed as well, but I have had zero issues with humidity. It has a lot to do with the dry air out here. D-R-Y! You guys on the coasts would shrivel within an hour of being here. It just ***** the moisture out of everything.

Rick, I assume you do your own oil changed as you have a Mobil 1 oil cabinet. How do you store your used oil and what do you do with your catch pan?

I like the way you manage to store the bottles. That wall is great. If you can post a "zoom" of that I would appreciate it.

Congratulations

Jorge

Jorge, I will post up some pics this weekend. I'm busy painting all the garage door supports and rails. I'll snap some shots shortly.

Actually, I don't change my own oil. I just stock it so I know exactly what oil the dealerships are using in my cars. Last time I took my Kia in there, they filled it up with the wrong oil because 2011 marked the first year of the new 2.0L GDI Turbo and no one there bothered to read the filler cap!

I had a similar experience so I started just to do the oil changes myself. I just have not figured out a good way to deal with the waste oil.

I had thought you could bring used oil in a container to any oil change spot to be disposed of? I'm sure I've heard of other doing this.

We have lots of places around Ontario that will take the oil. I am just looking for a good way to store it in the garage and transport it to on of the drop off sites.

Most guys i know that do it just re-use the 5L jugs as you can easily seal the top and easy to transport.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I do my oil and transmission oil changes myself. I admittedly don't have a good system for the draining of the pan and whatnot - somewhere on GJ there was a guy who had a piece of PVC screwed to the wall on an angle so the pan and funnels could all drain down and into the catch container, which seems like a good idea (I am not that organized - if Rick ever saw my garage, he'd develop a nervous tic).

However, what I can contribute is - I have two fairly large plastic jugs I catch my used oil in - both are around 13L I think - one is a Costco sized Downy fabric softerner bottle, and the other is from Costco kitty litter (they used to have it in big boxes, and now have gone to plastic jugs). I needed larger containers because when I do the serviceon our van, it's a little over 4L of engine oil and a little under 4L of transmission fluid, so trying to squeeze that back into the 1L containers is a recipe for disaster.

These have pretty wide mouths, so it's easy to drain the pan into them. I keep my oil containers in garbage bags, and then every couple of months, I take it to the city dump where they have receptacles for used oil, oil filters, and drop off for oil containers (as well as batteries, antifreeze, etc.).

Cheers,
Keith

All this talk of oil possibly spilling on garage floors has almost done me in. I need to call my shrink.

At least most Calgary firehalls, and the landfills have a waste oil depot. I only keep one 4 liter jug full around for quick campfire starters, hell most of my buddies do!

Actually, only a few of the city's fire stations have drop off sites, but all the landfills do accept household chemicals (not commercial) at no charge.

It has changed my life! I have used it a lot recently. Between that, my air hose, and my retractable extension cord, I am living the dream.
