Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Rick,

Unfortunately, exposed aggregate does need to be re-sealed periodically - some say every year, but I'm more on the 2-3 year laziness plan.

I go to Northland Construction in the NE (on about 27th Ave NE) and buy the stuff they have in the 5 gal pail. Comes in semi and high gloss - I bought the high gloss a couple of weeks ago - I think it's called North High Gloss in a black 5 gal can. A little under $150 I think. Give the driveway a good pressure wash, let it dry til the next day and roll on the sealer. And catch a good buzz (that stuff is riiiiipe). 5 gal is enough to do my driveway (which looks longer than yours) and my back patio.

Cheers,
Keith

Northlands has been great to deal with for me as well Rick. A little DIY can save a lot of green.

Well, I sure like the sound of $150 plus the cost of some materials over the $575+ quotes I have so far. I also have a 15' x 15' patio in the back that will require resealing. I see the pros in the area using a paint roller and a gas mask. Doesn't look that complicated. I think this will be a perfect summer job for me. Thanks for the tip guys. Do you think one coat would be enough? I'm leaning towards doing one coat per year.

My name is Umberto btw.

Remember that and I'll be impressed. :D

I'll just refer to you as "The dude with all the crown moulding"!

Looks Great Rick!

Cheers!

Haha! Beer definitely fits in one of the holders. I actually fell back in love with this creeper seat recently. It is great for working on lower panels and wheels. I have a higher set with foam pad for doing doors and upper panels. I'm glad no one took me up on my $40 Kijiji offer. Just need to find time to use it more.

Rick, I've never used one of those creeper seats before? But makes sense.. I do sit on my creeper and roll around at times when working on the car at times.

What I DID buy about 10 years ago are a set of these (but red tray in the bottom of mine):
$T2eC16h,!)cE9s4PvnR+BRe(pjYHm!~~60_3.JPG

GREAT buy..as saved my back from early injury I'll bet. :) I'd like to try out one of those seated creepers.. I'll be it's easier on the back when working on the lower panels and wheels.

The low profile one (pictured above) gives the illusion that it would support your back, but it doesn't. You'd have to lean waaaay back before your back would even be touching the vertical support section. Its ergonomics are really bad. I played with the idea of picking up one like you have, but I opted for something bigger. It's working out well. It's pictured here between my Craftsman cabinets:

just crept thru your post after reading Dubbers. Man my boss is gonna be pissed I didnt do anything all day. Oh well. I stumbled upon this site. Just about to purchase a starter home. My one requirement was 2.5 car garage. I barely got a 1. It is 9 x 25 on the inside.

I will try and document any changes I do, only wish I could teleport yours onto my home.

That looks nice, and would provide more "surface area" coverage. ;) Other than that, it looks like it does the same job. I actually need to replace the wood on one of mine, it got broken after some 8-9 years of use.

I know that feeling since I found this site. :) Things are a bit slow for me at work right now, so it helps to fill the time as I feel I'm in the calm before the storm.

I posted pics of the door rail support brackets, but here's a couple showing the actual rails. It took a bit of work, but I sure like this look much more than the standard metal look.

I am not going to focus some attention on the back of the garage door. I just don't like it. I am rethinking this entire wall. Not sure the dark pillars above the door aren't working for me.

Recently, a newer forum member was asking about RaceDeck and expressed his concern over the price of doing his space. It isn't cheap, but I have found it to be a wise investment. My FreeFlow style floor has allowed me to use my garage as a family entertainment space. It is the most popular hang out in our entire home. At +/- $3 per sq ft, it adds up, but it is money well spent in my opinion.

Dubbers is an inspiration to itty bitty garages, unfortunely I need to try and make it a semi-working garage. Floor jacks and the like. Looks like only "detailers" and "toy parkers" have the really nice garages.

Tile my friend. . .Tile. cheap, tough as hell, will handle all manner of spills. The plastic floors look seriously pretty but based on pretty much every thread I've read on here, they are built for guys that clean their cars a lot.

Take note, this is not bashing the plastic floor guys but just stating observed facts.
I love the pretty floors but haven't seen one instance where they would hold up to the abuse I would dish out.

As far as I can tell, if you want a floor that will take a beating and not require much special care you have 2 choices. . .bare concrete or tile.

Rick, garage is fantastic. Just wasted, I mean enjoyed, 1 hr going through and reading. A lot to envy / try to copy.

Curious, what beginner set of detailing products would you suggest?

Thanks again for the entertainment and ideas.

Definitely agree on that, the flooring makes the garage more a living space than just a garage. Yesterday evening we found ourselves hanging out in the garage in the evening - that was a first! But then, our garage floor is less than a week old, so maybe the newness will wear off soon and we will go back to sitting in front of the tv to spend family time! :)

Rick,

I got a quick question. When you painted the walls, did you remove EVERYTHING before painting? Or did you just mask off some things (like the garage door opener railing brackets)?

I mostly masked. At first, I did a pretty crude job since I never really thought I cared that much. But, it turns out I care a lot, so I've had to return to the painting to correct shortcuts I took originally. In hindsight, I would have been much more patient with the painting. It would have saved a lot of time in the long run. Long story longer: take your time and remove what you can and mask the rest.

Amen to that! I will be starting a thread very soon and the first step I took was to have my boys clear out a 40'x13' room in our basement so we can move EVERYTHING out before I start our garage renovation. I decided this will be my Father's Day present, and my boys were sitting around playing just XBox anyway. Took them 10 minutes, but every little bit helps! My wife said this is part of the present - everyone helping.

Great advice Rick.. and Tom, that sounds good except I don't have a basement or a room big enough in the house to take ALL of my garage items..so it's going to either be get a POD, or do one side at a time..

I'm glad my thread interested you enough to wade through it all. It has been a lot of fun to share my progress with other like-minded people.

If you are thinking of a starter detail kit, I would strongly recommend Griot's Garage. They have such a complete line of products, that a beginner can build a really useful kit.

I see you reside in MN, so hit them up at: http://www.griotsgarage.com/category/car+care/car+care+kits.do

If anyone is reading this in Canada and is looking to purchase quality detailing products, I would suggest checking out AutoObsessed online: They rock! http://www.autoobsessed.com/shop/griots-garage-m-34.html

I'm not saying Griot's is the best, but I find their products always deliver what they promise. If I were going to shell out a few bucks to get started, they would be my pick for best bang for the buck. I also like Adam's too. They have some kits on their site:

No sweat. I do prefer the Adam's 2-bucket wash kit over the big red Griot's bucket.

New to postings here.

Great garage space. I love the paint job, especially the stripe with the Audi script.

While I don't have a tile floor (I went with a UCoat It epoxy) I have found that I spend a lot of 'social' time in the garage due to how 'nice' me and my friends find it. I don't have a patio yet (new construction) so the garage is THE space.

Thanks. Luckily, our neighborhood is perched high above the river valley. It is quite surreal what is happening in Calgary (and the rest of Southern Alberta) at the moment. Entire neighborhoods are under water. Massive evacuations all over the city. All schools are closed and many businesses too. Just crazy.

Just talked to my aunt who lives just off elbow drive right on the water, and she's in bad shape right now. Feel horrible as she was flooded several years ago as well when the water came up.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone in the area. An ex-coworker lost everything in a flood. Lived in a flood plain with no insurance. He said he learned his lesson, everyone pitched in, lots of items were replaced via donations, etc. What happens? Gets flooded again. Did he ever buy insurance? Nope. What does he do? Asks, "Do you have a spare TV I can have?" Looking for handouts from everyone and collecting unemployment. He was a waste of oxygen before and looks like nothing's changed.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Thanks for the concern, guys. It's been a tragic day, but it's almost entirely property damage. Considering the scope of the flooding, I'm actually shocked there hasn't been more loss of life. That said, four souls lost the battle with the river south of Calgary. It's been a heart wrenching day and we are just hoping that we have seen the worst of it. Calgary is a world class city, and if anyone can bounce back, it will be us. Again, thanks for the concern.

On a personal note, our home is located on a plateau high above the river valley. Our neighborhood is built on land with a high clay content, so the constant rain has had me on edge. So far, so good. Our home has a sump pump, and it hasn't had to turn on yet. I think this is due to the slight slope of our lot. A few neighbour have lots that are flatter and they don't have sumps, so they've been getting some pretty major seepage in their basements. Tomorrow, I plan on checking with the neighbor's to see how everyone fared. Crazy time.

Garage is safe, though! In fact, with 100,000 people ordered to evacuate, I'm surprised no one called us to see if it we had vacancy in it.

I thought you'd get a kick out of this... I noticed the large metallic device with the red handles marked MATS very early on in your thread. I thought it was a brand name like MATCO printed on them and wondered, "What on earth is that thing?" :headscrat

I finally noticed a picture last night while showing your garage to a neighbor and there were, wait for it... actual floor mats held in place by those items marked MATS.

:wtf:

I'm as dumb as paint. Really dumb paint.

Rick,

Looking for some detailing advice. Trying to get a98 Lexus 400 back on the road. Been sitting out for a year or so. As soon as the mechanical is done, I need to take care of the outside. Any suggestions on the best way to bring some life back in to the paint?
I figure it will need some TLC. It's white paint of that matters.

Thx

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Thought I would post up a little update of life in my garage. Anyone who is familiar with the RaceDeck Free Flow tile system knows that jacking a car on it can be a PITA. So, I finally found something that should help. It's a very dense rubber matting that I picked up at the local Rona.

IMG_8608 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

This should save me a lot of time and anguish removing sections of tile. I will be giving it a test run this fall when I swap both my cars back to their winter wheels/tires.

IMG_8609 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

One nice feature is that the entire mat slides perfectly under my stairs where I store the jack:

IMG_8612 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

The beauty of the FF tiles is, that anything that sits on the floor is protected from moisture.

IMG_8613 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

I also got a slimmer piece that I cut in half for my jack stands.

IMG_8611 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

What else? Well, I was tired of sitting on inferior fold out chairs so I splurged and picked up a couple of these chairs by "Outbound". Very comfy for your typical lawn chair. Nice to hang out in the garage during the summer days and nights. (occasionally)

IMG_8614 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

That's really about it as far as updates/changes/mods to the garage. I'm currently awaiting delivery of a few car detailing products along with a Mytee Firebird Vapor Steam machine and an Aztec Hot Rod hot water carpet extractor. Should be here in a week to ten days. Excited to get going on some detailing projects.
