Great idea Rick and everything is amazingly perfect as always. I'll have to locate some similar rubber mats here in the states to keep my free flow looking as nice as yours. I tried some workout mats but the density wasn't high enough. The ones you found are really perfect.

Very nice Rick, you've stepped up the class yet again on me, i was just going to use scrap plywood haha. That almost looks like the mats at Hockey Rinks to walk on with your skates.

Nice chairs Rick. Let us know how the pads worked out for you.

For sure.

They seem really dense, but there's really no "knowing" until they get put to the test.

Thanks. They are quite similar to rink mats, but not as smooth in texture. Not to worry, I'm sure you'll come across some clearance sale and they'll be giving them away!

Thought I would post up a little update of life in my garage. Anyone who is familiar with the RaceDeck Free Flow tile system knows that jacking a car on it can be a PITA. So, I finally found something that should help. It's a very dense rubber matting that I picked up at the local Rona.

This should save me a lot of time and anguish removing sections of tile. I will be giving it a test run this fall when I swap both my cars back to their winter wheels/tires.

I'm debating the free floating, why is it so bad? I only ask because I have a motorcycle lift in my garage.

I hate tapatalk - but this was posted from it.

Also if you don't mind me asking, what are the dimensions of your garage? I'm trying to get an idea of how big of a border I want.

Rick,

You might have answered this question within this thread already, but where did you get all of the vinyl work done?

Thanks,
Joe

The FreeFlow system isn't "bad" per se, but it is more show than go, if you know what I mean. It doesn't stand up well to hard and heavy abuse since each tile is elevated. I made the mistake of jacking my Audi when the first snow flew after installing the floor, and the first couple pumps actually caused the jack wheels to sink into the tiles, ruining them. RaceDeck was cool about it and sent me some replacement tiles, but I haven't used a jack or jack stands on the floor since. That's its only real downfall for me. Until finding these heavy mats, I had been removing a section to allow the jack to rest on bare concrete. I'm hoping I don't have to do that now. One other pitfall is that dirt and debris accumulates beneath the floor. Most of it can be sucked up with a shopvac, but it is necessary to dismantle the floor from time to time to do a thorough rinse of the floor beneath. I have posted a photo tutorial here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147886&page=6

My space is pretty much 24' x 24'. My red border is exactly 16' across (same width as door) and 18' deep.

Most of what you see is now paint. The only vinyl decals I currently have up are the Audi and Kia decals. Both came from an eBay contact I stumbled upon. The Audi Q7 decal is a standard decal, but the Kia one is based on a photograph I supplied the designer. I have not been able to contact them since. They are much like the ones offered by other ebay retailers such as this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUDI-R8-Sup...4446?pt=UK_Wallpaper&var=&hash=item4ac623f23e

The raised letters are through another eBay retailer called enthusi-works.

Well, I've reached the decision to skip the sink idea. The contractor was out today, and the sink I purchased just won't work, plus the cost just doesn't make sense. So, instead of hunting down another sink and paying $100's to run the plumbing, I am having him run a hot water service to compliment the cold water service I already have running to the garage. The main reason for the sink was to have hot water access, so this has probably worked out for the best. We're also having a soft water system installed. Will be done on Wednesday.

Sounds like that was obviously a tough decision to make but you weighed the cost benefit ratio of it and it didn't make sense.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

A y-connector will allow me to, at least, mix the hot and cold water together, and that was the main goal. Would have been a nice little luxury, but you can't have it all...

In hindsight, should have done it when the house was being built because now it's too much of a hassle and expense. Oh well.

Who knows.. in the future you might decide to have it installed. Just get the hot water there to go with the cold and see what happens.

Very happy to finally have hot water service in the garage. This will make life a lot easier since i won't be traipsing through the house with hot water buckets any longer.

Here are some updated photos. I've been on a mission to find a visible place for everything I need. If something is in a drawer, I tend to forget I have it so there's been a few (maybe more than a few) new storage bins mounted around the space:

They did a clean install for sure. I'm very lucky i guess with our small place. Our mud room/laundry room is on the other side of my garage door and i have a utility sink in there that i use all the time.

Really nice! I think it looks way too clean haha!

My dad always taught me to keep my workspace clean. He taught me lots of other stuff, but that was one lesson that I took to heart!

That is very convenient. We went a little fancy on our main floor, so it isn't ideal slugging back and forth between the kitchen and the garage. I still wish I had a drain in the garage though.

I just pulled the trigger on a hot water extractor and vapor steam cleaner, so having the hot water handy will be great since I wont' have to wait as long for the machines to reach operating temperature. Also, I had both water lines run through the water softener so I won't be using the hard, mineral-rich water when doing my detailing.

Rack and buckets from IKEA?

I think of Ikea as the "Swedish Gladiator". :rocker:

Really? You have no drain?

Nice! Which one did you get? I just purchased this steamer

No drain. I don't use much water inside the garage, but I still wish I had one. It was an option during construction, but it was waaaay too expensive to justify. I had already spent quite a bit of upgrade money in the garage and I had to draw the line somewhere.

I just received my Mytee Firebird. The Daimer is quite a bit more $, but I'm sure it will suit your needs since you'll be using yours a lot more than I'll be using mine. I purchased it through a retailer in the States for ~$300. Hoping to put it to use soon. My Aztec Hot Rod extractor should be here next week, got it through the States as well.

Hey Rick,

Apologies if I missed this - but where'd you get the stool that is at your workbench? Looks like craftsman but I can't really tell.

Thanks!

No problem. I picked that Snap-On stool up at Costco (Canada) one day while I was browsing the aisles. It was a pretty good deal, but I haven't seen it there since.

Not yet. Too nervous. I may give it a go in the next week. I have a feeling the jack stands may cut through the mat like a cookie cutter.

Too fancy for work. :p

If the rubber ones don't work, cut some 5/8" ply wood pads and spray them with duplicolor bed armour spray bomb (Crappy Tire) They'll be black and look good and protect your floor.

Hmmm, that actually sounds like a fun little project. I think the rubber matting will work okay with the jack itself, but the armour plywood would be perfect for the stands. Maybe they have duplicolor armour spray in red? LOL

Yes i wouldn't definitely say just stick with a piece of plywood for under the jack stands.

I think a combination of laziness and past experience would have me skipping the plywood all together and either welding a plate or an angle iron frame to the bottom of the jackstands. Paint to match of course.

You're hired!

I was puttering around today and made some minor changes. They include cleaning up the "Kia" wall by removing a shelf, and a few items I was hanging there (step ladder & work lights) I think it looks a lot cleaner. I also freed up some space by remounting my fire extinguisher and air hose reel. I originally mounted the reel down low which wasted space. Every foot matters!

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

good thing you dont live near me, most of your cleaning products would have been "long term borrowed" to my garage.

I see you have some spent some coin on your carpet cleaners (over $500usd for each :eyecrazy:)

Is there a brand or model you would recommend for a not so professional price?

----a review I found on the hot rod. (always take others opinions as a only opinions, not facts)

Honestly? It's **** if you ask me. I would trade someone for a Mytee Lite II, and give the $200 without blinking.

The positives:
-It gets a little hotter than the Mytee Lite II
-It's more portable, smaller unit than the Mytee

The negatives:
-A smaller 1 gallon tank, requires many refills
-the wait time for hot water
-It's loud as hell!
-the psi is SUPER low

That about sums it up.

For me, it came down to either the Mytee Lite II or the Aztec Hot Rod. The Mytee is just too big for my space and it was quite a bit more expensive when shipping was factored in. I found positive and negative reviews on each. In the end, I pulled the trigger on the Aztec and I'm confident it will meet my needs. With the hot water service in the garage, I can fill it up hot so that will cut down on the wait time and I won't be using it on more than one car at a time, so the smaller tank doesn't concern me in the least. I plan on putting it to the test this weekend.

Mytee has a less expensive extractor called the Tempo, but it's cold water. Very portable and it gets pretty good reviews. I think MSRP is $399.

What's a "CD"? :p

No kidding!
