Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Thanks EMC2.

Here's a little update on the "goings on" in my garage.

Since we are going down to one car, I have converted my second tire rack into a bit of storage shelf. The new car's summer wheels are up. I coated them with Gtechniq "Wheel Armor" prior to storing them:

I felt the beams above the garage door were a bit too dark, so I played around with the paint a bit. I also painted the attic access panel to blend in.

Magnificent updates Rick. I really like the stripe on the inside of the garage door.

And not sure how I missed it previously, but CONGRATS on the new car :3gears:

Thanks EMC2, you'd be proud of my efforts to keep my car pristine given the current winter road conditions. The car is an absolute blast to drive.

I made a few mild updates by adding some framed Audi posters and putting a blue stripe behind the clock.

Re: Rick's Audi Double

Glad to see that you are still improving. I don't think your garage will ever be pronounced "finished". :D

I'm referring to the 3M protective film that was installed by the dealer. I opted for the full hood/fender package since rock chips are a big issue up here with the roads being graveled all winter.

I had a 2000 Jetta and when I bought new, had the 3M film put on the front, hood, mirrors, etc. Great product, but a couple of years later got hit with a small sharp stone that hit with such velocity that it tore a hole in the film and also ripped the paint. Paint I could fix, but never did figure out how to fix the film itself.

Re: Rick's Audi Double

I've seen the heat gun fix small imperfections in the 3M, but for something like that it has got to be replaced. It's like a "bullet proof vest" for your car. If something big enough hits it, it's gonna do damage. My wife drove a 2007 Lincoln for about 6 months (POS) and it didn't have 3M and that front end required a full respray ($600) by the end of the winter. The amount of gravel and salt/gravel mixture put down on our roads is criminal.

My garage will never be complete. It is a hobby bordering on obsession.

I love what you've done with the place!

Any tips for how you laid out the Audi stripes on the walls? Getting the horizontal lines straight would be hard enough, but then getting the angle just right must be hard too. Where did you get the lettering for the "quattro"? I want to repaint my walls this summer and do something similar.

Thanks for the interest. The stripes have been an ongoing learning experience. My most recent approach is to use a level and lightly scribe a pencil line and then get the trusty Frog Tape and tape off the edge. Nothing too tricky. I then paint the inside of that edge using the existing wall color to prevent any bleeding of the stripe color. Once that is dry, I use a little 3" roller and that's about it. I'm getting nice crisp lines by painting the edge first. As for the angle, I'm completely reliant on my HS geometry and trig knowledge. Using the factory logo as my reference I just figure out the proper length of the 'triangle' using the corresponding height of the stripe I'm painting. The version I used was 10 cm x 2.5cm so whatever height I'm going for, I would multiply that figure by 2.5 and divide by 10 to get the corresponding width of the 'triangle'. Either I have way "over explained" this or confused you, but hopefully you get what I'm saying.

The lettering you see for "Quattro" was just a decal I ordered off eBay. There's a whack of them available online. I was tempted to use a stencil of the word and hand-paint it, but went the easy route.

Your shop is a work of art.

Thanks for saying that. I appreciate the compliment.

Hey Rick, what ever happened to your sink? Did you ever install it? I'm planning a similar hand sink in my garage and wanted to see what it might look like.

Rick,

Your explanation of how you did the strip (and triangle) were very clear. If I have a need to paint a stripe like that, now I know how. :) GREAT work as always. I really like where you've taken the garage.

Rick,

Impressed with the garage. You have given me some great ideas. Where did you get the black wire baskets that you have hanging next to the spray bottles? I did a Google search for them but have not been able to find any that are the same.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, that project got the axe. The sink was a silly design since it didn't have enough space when mounted to hook up the plumbing. Plus, the plumbing firm I had come out was talking about having to install some atrocious looking "vent" that would have had to run up the inside of the garage wall. The price, practicality of the sink design, and overall benefit just didn't work. In the end, I just had them run a hot-water service alongside the existing cold-water service installed by the builder.

Thanks, Budo. You give me a lot of positive feedback and it's always appreciated. I check your thread out regularly. Keep up the good work on your end!

Thanks Joe. I got the baskets through DiamondLifeGear.com They are the bottom two on the linked page:

http://diamondlifegear.com/wallorganizers.html#buynojmp

They use FedEX for Canadian orders, and I was hit with ridiculous brokerage and additional shipping fees. Because they put each basket in its own box, I was hit with $30 per box = $180 in extra shipping/handling fees! I had it out with them and they were massive jerks. But, I love the baskets.

This may be the most beautiful garage I've ever seen in my life. I say this as a single tear rolls down the side of my face.

My sister bought a 2012 S4 last year and has been wanting to bring her garage up to scratch. I showed her a pic of yours. She's jealous, and I apparently should get to work on her garage right away. Nice job. Very clean space.

Simmer down. This isn't eHarmony.

Ha! Nice one

Helping her with the garage is tough since I'm in Texas and she's in Georgia, but I do what I can. I do however take care of gettting her toys for the S4. Got her a color matched delete plate for the front and some supercharged badges to replace the V6-T ones last year for Christmas. Got a nice tint job for her this last Christmas. I don't mean to jack your thread, but seeing as your an Audi man I figured you wouldn't mind.

Re: Rick's Audi Double

It seems like it's either minus-30 degrees or plus-10 this winter, but either way, keeping a car and a garage clean is a mighty chore. I'm winning the battle on this day, but Spring can't come soon enough:

It's phenomenal. My favorite aspect has to be the 8-spd transmission. The shifts are quick-fire! I have 2000km on it so far and every one of them has been fun. As for keeping the car and garage clean, let's just say I have a little help:

Keep fighting the good fight Rick!

The car AND garage look GREAT.

Thanks, man. It's a battle some days, but the RD helps keep the dirt/debris at bay.

Re: Rick's Audi Double

Hi Sean. I love the radiant tube heater. I went back and forth with my choice (radiant vs. forced air) and I am very happy with my decision. In addition to the energy and $ savings, I love the fact that the recovery time for my space is about 2-3 mins since the radiant heats the actual garage, not just the air. I also like the fact that the air isn't being disturbed therefore I see little dust accumulation.

IMG_9949 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

My HVAC guy got me a deal on a 75K btu Sun-Ray, but if I were you, I would give the boys at Calcana a call.

http://www.calcana.com/garage-heaters/garage-heaters.htm

Depending on the install costs for your space, I would say a safe estimate would be $1500-2000.
