Re: Rick's Audi Double

This is a great garage; definitely one of my inspirations on this forum. I hope to poach some of your ideas!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I'm glad to hear there are elements of my garage that you want to "poach".

Audi should have one of those photos in a SQ5 brochure. I'd buy one.

Thanks.

Nice color on your SQ5! Do you park more than one car in the garage usually?

Yes, I am pretty happy with the Estoril Blue and it gets a lot of compliments. We only have the one car now, but there's a chance we pick up a second car in the future. We had a Kia Optima and an Audi Q7 up until August. Here's a shot of the garage when we had two cars:

Thanks for the info Rick, will be looking into those for the spring! Both Audi and the garage look fantastic!

Thanks. It's nice having the flexibility of hot/cold/warm water in there.

Your baby looks right at home.

I probably spent as much time preparing for the car's arrival as I did for my son's! How sad...

What do you use to clean your race deck normally? I have the same free flow tiles you do, and I have a floor drain (although its not operational until this spring when we can trench the lines in).

I use Pine Sol and a regular mop. It does a really good job of keeping the very top clean. If dirt has accumulated between the grooves, the mop doesn't do an effective job, so I also have a bristle broom, but when it gets to that point I go to my pressure washer process. What are you using to keep the floor looking spiffy?

Well you damn well should  .....It's awesome man good choice :thumb up:

Thanks Sunbimmer.

Thanks for the info. My race deck floor was just installed this week, its gotten dirty due to a little bit of concrete grinding that had to be done to level the floor out so I will be giving it its first cleaning this weekend.

Do you have a floor drain? If not, does the water just evaporate from the mopping?

My biggest regret in life is not having a drain installed. I wring that mop pretty good so there's not a lot of water left over after a mopping. But, when I am using water in the garage, I find the infrared heater does an amazing job of getting the floor dry. Still, I should have done a drain. Next house, I will have one of those grills that spans the front of the pad. Or, one that runs down the middle.

By the way, your garage makes me very happy.

Haha thanks, I'm looking forward to it being done so it can make me happy too :p

How much Pine Sol do you add to a bucket of water?

I can already tell I am going to be obsessive over keeping this floor clean.

I just drop a dollop in. Maybe 1/2 cup. It's the thorough power washing that really keeps all the little crevices clean. Thing is, it usually appears cleaner to the eye and camera than it actually is. That's a good thing. Just try to keep from dragging in big mud/snow chunks. You'll be fine!

Rick!
After almost three days of going through every single page of your thread I have to say that your garage is absolutely amazing! You've done an awesome job. I hope that some day I will be able to see it in person since I'm in Calgary also.
Excellent choice on the new car. I don't think I've seen a single one in Calgary yet. I've been looking at SQ5 for a while now myself. I might convince my wife to trade in our both vehicles for just one Audi lol
P. S. My first post on this forum is also dedicated to your thread lol

Re: Rick's Audi Double

Looking good.

Thanks Paul. I check in on your thread quite regularly. I like seeing your improvements and enhancements.

Before: better than mine.
After: better than mine.

;)

Great job. Always like to see the progress you make on your garage.

The rate of progress has slowed, but I'm always looking for ways to maximize the efficiency and appearance of the place.

Looking bad ***, as usual :)

I'm enjoying following your rapid progress, too.

What Quasi said! :) This is/has been one of my fav garages. Keep it up Rick.

Thanks Budo. I know I can always count of you for a word of encouragement.

I appreciate the time it must have taken you to cover all the pages! The SQ5 is a perfect car for where I currently am in my life. It's got the grunt and the practicality all rolled into one tight package. There's a few out there, but I haven't seen another Estoril Blue yet.

What's the state of your current garage, and what resides in it?

BTW, I've convinced my wife twice to trade two cars for a new Audi:
2006 Cadillac STSV + 2009 Pontiac G8 GT = 2009 Audi Q7
2009 Audi Q7 + 2011 Kia Optima SX = 2014 Audi SQ5

It can be done!

We bought our first house a year ago. It came with a double detached garage. Outside dimensions are 20x20. Not too bad for a Calgary garage. It is uninsulated and that's my #1 priority for this summer. After that part is complete I can start putting cabinets up etc. I have a few things in there already, but it's a mess.
Right now my 2011 Lancer Ralliart permanently resides in there. My ****** went four months ago and I still haven't had a chance to fix it up. It's been too cold. For now I drive my wife's BMW X1. She takes transit to work so it works out.
I looked at SQ5 when I first heard about it. But it's just out of my price range. At least for now. But who knows, maybe we will also become a single car family

Sorry to hear about your transmission. Hope you get it sorted. Were you by chance whipping down the Bow Trail hill in a white X1 today? (Small world if you were!). The SQ5 pricing was a bit steep, but it is easy to justify when you stomp on the gas pedal. When you do the insulation, start a thread. I'd like to follow your progress. Good luck.

Thanks. Dealer wants $20k to fix it. And yes, it's twenty thousand dollars. The car has that twin clutch transmission so it's not that simple. I found a used one for fraction of a cost.
No, ours is bronze. I was there last night though lol.
I'm sure SQ5 is a lot of fun :)
I will definitely get a thread going. Thanks!

The metal pegboard is from Craftsman. I'll post the link below. Good luck with your new construction build.

If this wasn't Calgary, I'd have a hard time believing the dealer wanted $20K, but I totally believe it.

Re: Rick's Audi Double

Unfortunately, that project got the axe. The sink was a silly design since it didn't have enough space when mounted to hook up the plumbing. Plus, the plumbing firm I had come out was talking about having to install some atrocious looking "vent" that would have had to run up the inside of the garage wall. The price, practicality of the sink design, and overall benefit just didn't work. In the end, I just had them run a hot-water service alongside the existing cold-water service installed by the builder.

Rick, you should look into "cheater vents" and perhaps a SS laundry style sink.

Now that you have one car in there only there should be plenty of space! just think how much easier it would be to clean brushes!

Re: Rick's Audi Double

Just picked up a 2014 Q5 for the wife. It has the supercharged 3.0 V-6. I am amazed at the balls that thing has and that is coming from someone who drives a diesel pickup.

I stomped on it to pass a guy on a divided highway and hit 95mph before I new what was happening.

I love your garage, but my wife will have to settle for parking in my "fishing" garage.

Your logical and wise comments may result in me revisiting the sink idea. As I was reading your post, I was rinsing some brushes in a bucket. Not the worst thing in the world, but I do still like the idea of having a working sink. It will probably come down to whether I find a style of sink I like (and price). S/S laundry sinks are a bit tricky to find from my experience. At least ones that don't cost upwards of $1000.

What a great looking garage! So clean and tidy. Another great piece of inspiration for me and my future garage. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks. Part of the fun is keeping it clean (as sick as that sounds!)

There certainly is a wide range of engine options for the Q5. I always wanted an "S" car, so the launch of the SQ5 was perfect for me. I think the 3.0T in the one you guys got is very potent and surprises quite a few people. My neighbor has an older S4 and was one of those caught off-guard by its performance.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I should be finished with a few minor improvements by the weekend, so I will post some up to date photos later on in the week. I now need to do some Internet searching for S/S laundry sinks.

I will be captain obvious, but the vw group underrates all their engines by a bunch. I think they must dyno their engines at 15,000 feet in 100 degree temps, because cars with their kind of hp aren't supposed to be that fast.

Rick
What about a restaurant that went out of business? Maybe a good place to get a SS sink.
Warren

It's a longshot. I've been eyeing up a few restaurant supply places, but I'm still ambivalent about a sink at this point. We've got some landscaping projects on the mind that will probably eat up any 'sink cash'.

I won't argue. I've had it for 3 months and still giggle when I get into it.

Not a problem. The stone and pots look great on your facade. I'm glad my place served as some inspiration for yours. Looks like you have a pretty sweet setup there.

Off topic a little here but does anyone know the mechanical differences between the 3.0T in the non-S Q5 and the 3.0T in the SQ5? Is it just a difference in tuning?

Re: Rick's Audi Double

There are some actual mechanical differences. It gets an upgraded crankshaft and a stiffened block. The larger engine compartment allows them to give it more boost (better able to keep things cool with the extra space) over the 3.0T in the S4/S5. There's also a different exhaust system. The 8-spd transmission is tweaked, too.

Here's a good article about it:

I'm in awe over your garage Rick! The organization and lay-out of your garage has given me lots of ideas to use in my motorcycle shed-to-be. Especially the flooring and the vinyl on the walls is something I'll be using (floor if funds allow).

Hi Rick, do you order all your Griot product from Auto Obsessed? Up also in Alberta (Fort McMurray). Just finishing a garage makeover for a new toy.

Thanks. I'm a big fan of the RaceDeck.

Yeah, I get 95% of my stuff from Auto Obsessed. The other 5% comes from eShine.ca

Great looking garage! I love the color scheme and your organization.

Thanks. The colour scheme has been something I have enjoyed working on.

Garage looks awesome.

Still like the RaceDeck free flow? I can't decide between free flow or their TuffShield.

I like the shine the tuffshield has but not sure if free flow is better for washing cars on. I also do mostly detailing in my garage but don't want a bunch of gunk building up under the tiles. Also somewhat concerned with dropping small parts or screws in the slots.

I was pretty set on Tuffshield but I think freeflow is going to be about $1,000 cheaper for my 800sqft!

This is my first post and you have it.

Honored!

I can only speak on the FreeFlow but I love the fact that the floor stays virtually dry no matter what is going on in there. I will section out my floor and drag the floor to the driveway when accumulation builds up. It's mostly in the winter that this is an issue. Picking up little things isn't such a big deal if you have a magnet. I do primarily detailing in there and the FF is perfect for me.

Just went trough all of your 52 pages of comments and photos, and all I can say is WOW, impressive work  I'm a fellow car detailer that just bought his first home (without a garage ) and your thread just gave me plenty of ideas on how to organize my detailing products in my basement.

I may have missed it, but where did you bought your mats clip at?

It has become a bit of a marathon thread so nice work getting through it all. There are a lot of contributors to the thread that have mighty fine projects themselves, I hope you get a chance to check them out too.

I got the clips off ebay. Not sure it was this guy, but they are not that hard to find: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-S...903?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f33a88d5f

Good luck with the basement organization!
