Greetings from the West. Soooo, foaming carpet cleaner? Darn, you always seem to raise the ball. So, what is it? Please share, my credit card needs an "Auto Obsessed" workout.

Yeah, I have the Tornador foaming gun which can create a foam out of basically any liquid product. I just add some Griot's carpet cleaner and water to the gun, hook it up to the compressor, and PRESTO! You have foam. Pretty fun tool.

Alright I have been reading your thread for a while I need advice haha. I have a black 67 camaro with a few swirl marks on it. I was wondering what wax you suggest for black cars to help hide these marks. (dont mean to hijack your thread).

I have tried Meguiars Black Wax Paste. It does alright but still doesnt hide the swirl marks that well. Would love to have your input. I love your thread and value your input. Thanks in advance.

Ok, that Tornador foaming gun sounds bad assed! I might have to check into that. :)

Rick, can you give me any tips/specific products to clean wheels and tires.

You may cringe to learn that I usually just use Meguiar's Quick Detailer to mist onto the wheels, then just take a microfiber (clean or semi-used) and wipe off the dirt on the face and sides of the spokes. I never really clean the barrel because it would make my microfiber cloth instantly black with dirt/grime. So I am looking for a new method by which I can clean all the parts of the wheels/tires quickly and efficiently without destroying microfiber towels over and over in the process.

Love following your thread, keep it up!

Hi John, I'm not Rick but I enjoy detailing as well.

For my wheel's barel, I use this brush http://www.detailersdomain.com/EZ-Detail-Brush_p_637.html and that cleaner http://www.detailersdomain.com/P21S-Wheel-Cleaner-Gel-Formula-5-Liter-Refill_p_730.html

Some people like to use these wheel woolies http://www.detailersdomain.com/Wheel-Woolies-Bundle--3-Piece-Kit_p_721.html and that cleaner http://www.detailersdomain.com/Sonax-Full-Effect-Wheel-Cleaner-500ml_p_324.html Sonax also released this new wheel cleaner http://www.detailersdomain.com/Sonax-Wheel-Cleaner-Plus-500ml_p_1057.html

Although I never used the woolies or the Sonax cleaner, people seem to like them.

I hope Rick can chime in on your question.

Best regards and happy detailing!

Same here... Not being Rick... But I swear on Sonax full effect and the woollies though I think I got them for less than $50.

Re: Rick's Audi Double

Holy smokes! Thanks for all the feedback and questions, guys. I'll do my best to answer them but please understand I am just a hobbyist and it is quite possible the garage would make it appear that I'm more skilled and knowledgeable than I actually am! I am pretty damn good at buying stuff, though!

I haven't really had the need to lessen the appearance of swirls with my cars, but my understanding is that a good glaze will help fill in those tiny scratches and give the paint a smoother appearance. I was successful in removing 80% of the swirls on my dad's black CTS but those were scratches in the clear coat. For that I have about 4 or 5 different "systems" that I use in combination with a variety of polishing pads. For my Dad's I used a couple of polishes by Mezerna. Does your Camaro have a clear coat? Because, if the swirls are in the actual paint coat, you'd be better off taking the advice of someone like Nico who is a true pro.

Awesome garage ! And now I finally know who owns the garage that Richard calls his favorite place to detail outside his shop :)

That guy is welcome in my space anytime. His son was at the Edmonton Auto show last winter doing demos for the people. Who knows, maybe I can get him to actually visit and post up a tutorial or something!

It's a pretty cool tool, but I don't think I get enough opportunities to use it.

Looks like you guys have pretty much answered John's question, but I thought I would post up a couple of pics of my favourite wheel cleaning tools and products.

IMG_0322 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

These five products are my favourites, and I would say the GG Wheel Cleaner is my "go to" product. I find they are all quite capable of loosening grime, with the Heavy Duty GG spray being the most effective. I like them all, but I'll probably not be reordering the Chemical Guys once it runs out.

IMG_0325 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

The 3 red brushes are from the Daytona Speed Master line of brushes and the little one is probably my most used brush. The woolies are from Griot's and they are great, too. I especially like the little one for getting into the little nook and crannies. The triangular looking thing is a 3-finger mitt made of lamb's wool, the bristle brush is for getting in around the lugs, while the shaggy looking one is something I use time to time instead of the boar's hair brush you see at the top of the picture. The boar's hair brush is great for doing the face of a wheel, but it gets annoying sometimes because it sheds strands. The last brush you see is what I use to clean the tires.

As far as my technique, it is pretty much identical to this one:

Don't feel at all bad about using a spray detailer and a MF towel. I do that a lot, especially between details. I can usually get right into the barrel with a MF. No shame in that!

That's a lot of foam in the 335 floor. Can you do too much?

Yeah, it looks like a lot but that is actually very airy foam. I was playing around with the settings on the gun and this was the result of setting the gun to the highest air setting. Usually, the foam is more wet and it doesn't look as fluffy. I used the lowest air setting on the back seat floor and it was way more "liquidy"? Eventhough it looks like an avalanche of foam, the floor was virtually dry once I brushed the foam in using a bristle brush and vacuumed it up.

What a read, Rick. Phenomenal. I know I've read up before, but checking back in shed light on a serious amount of changes and of course your (obsessive) attention to detail. If I eventually own a garage that's 1/4 of the space yours is, I'll die a happy man. Also, gorgeous SQ5. Last december I traded in my B6 A4 (5 speed, 1.8T, sport w/ quattro) for a '12 B8 A4 (2.0T, 8 speed paddle, S-line w/ quattro) and have fallen in love all over again. The 8-speed blows my mind, cruising at 1,800rpms at 85 mph... can't beat it when paired with the get-up-and-go it packs.

Looking forward to whatever else you come up with for the space!

Re: Rick's Audi Double

Also, meant to ask... Hartmann wheels in the winter? How's that working out? Our roads are in pretty bad shape in New England so I worry about cracking a 19" wheel in a pot hole. I'm thinking about using my OEM 18s for a winter set and then 19" peelers (same design as your winters) for summer sets.

Hot dayum that is one nice car :thumbup::thumbup: I like your eye for detail.

Rick, that's an awesome SQ5, sir. And thanks for sharing all the detailing info with us!

Thanks, guys. My life is pretty much a constant battle to keep my car looking brand new. Believe it or not, the forecast is calling for possible snow next week, so my work will soon be cut out for me. Wish me luck!

Sweet car Sir! You should bag it :)

No, no I shouldn't.

No, no it isn't.

I completely agree about the 8-speed. The quick shifts, perfect gear ratios, the responsiveness really add to my enjoyment of the powertrain. Mine makes a really nice "frap" between shifts which is music to my ears. Glad you hear you are as happy with yours.

The space is in a never-ending state of evolution. Contemplating a few things right now, but no immediate major plans.

Love the Hartmann's. Seem as quality as the OEM's and the 20" still gives me lots of cushioning from the occasional pot hole. I didn't have any concerns all of last winter, and hopefully the same will continue this year. Definitely the right move on my part. With 7 or 8 months of winter driving, I couldn't stand looking at a wheel that didn't fit with the look of the vehicle.

Sorry for hijacking your thread :)

Don't worry about the hijack, but you SHOULD be apologizing for posting that abomination of a Q5. That has got to be one of the most awkward looking vehicles I've ever seen. It looks like a portly Avant or something. Nasty!

If you are looking to waste 6 seconds of your life, you should check out this little clip I took of the exhaust note on my SQ5 in dynamic mode. You'll have to forgive my giggling...

Nature's way of reminding us all that we're Canadian, but still. White rug? Really?

God that sound is intoxicating! I was under the impression that the SQ5 had a turbocharged engine, but to my surprise, it is supercharged!

Yeah, nature has served up a bitter pill for us all to swallow. We are supposed to return to seasonal temps in a few days, but the city's trees have been utterly destroyed. It's enough to make a grown man cry, but my little 3-year-old was happier than a pig in ****. Took the sting out of it, watching him play in it.

Only in Alberta!!! Where the weather changes every 5 min...

It's not even a cliche.

Gotta love Calgary......in the summer lol...Hey plus side is you have Quattro :)

I don't know how people live without it.

and hate stance

you can catch up with your neighbor too!

Ha! There's stance and then there's walking around with your pants dragging on the ground with your *** hangin' out....

I had almost forgotten we had a neighbour back there!

It's gone from bad to worse up here.

So, I awoke at 6:00 to see a foot of snow so I had to perform an emergency winter tire swap. Didn't have much time for photos, but I did snap a few.

I will say I feel like a genius considering many cars (including a Porsche Panamera S and a whack of BMW's) hit the ditch this morning on the morning commute. With the SQ5's summer Pirelli's, there's a very good chance I may have joined them! Fortunately, Quattro and Blizzaks made my drive a breeze.

Here's a twitter pic someone posted of the worst intersection I saw on the drive to work:

Man, Calgary got owned. I'm in Saskatoon (about the same latitude but one province to the east) and we haven't seen any snow! However, it seems to be travelling down towards the south-east direction (as it usually does) because southwest SK got hit too.

HOLY COW. I'll take a miserable rain soaked Chicago area in September any day over that mess. Quattro is mandatory up der.

And from one Audi lover to another- Audi's rock. :rocker: Especially the S class! My daily driver....

What a nightmare for sure. My brother-in-law borrowed my truck today to drive around in the freak snowstorm that showed up on Monday. He took a few pics of it out and about and sent them to me.
