I recently aquired a Craftsman Radial arm saw. It is just the saw on a metal frame. My question is what size and thickness wood should I have to use for the table. Some items are still available from Sears but the cost is almost 100.00.

If it's on the recall you get the kit depending on the model, and if they have the retrofit guards for that model.

If not, you can get a check for $100 after sending in the motor assembly, (they will send you a prepaid shipping box)

Just kidding. But all the same, be extra careful with that bad boy.

The kit is large, heavy, and FREE. The upgrade includes a new handle, blade guard, discharge chute, table top and fence, new table clamps, rails, etc.

This free upgrade is worth doing. It immediatey can improve your saw's value greatly.

Another thing I did in addition was to order new carrier bearings for the carriage at $20 on ebay. That made a big difference as well in how smooth it moves.

Took about a week from the time I placed the order online to when I got the kit on my door step.

My circa 1978 wan't one that they would send the top and guard, instead they wanted me to send them the motor for $100. I declined, did a bit of research and re-applied for the recall upgrade using a different model number. They sent me all the parts and with minor modification I was good to go.

I didn't use the free top because I had already made a top with an adjustable wing. I also made a dust hood with spring loaded flaps for my saw. It actually works really well, though I only use it for 90* cuts and dados.
