Hi all. I just built a 40x72 garage. I'll post photos later. I plan on doing floor heat and I have a question about the boiler and the manifolds on the wall. I plan on doing mechanic and body work in my garage. I will be doing mainly body work, and will have a homemade ain't booth. Will there be any issues if I have my boiler on the back wall and not in a separate closet/room?

What kind of boiler? Obviously an electric one won't care, but some sort of gas may not like the fumes.

When faced with a similar situation, I opted for a fully condensing wall boiler that pulls in outside combustion air.

It's still not intrinsically safe. I shut it down completely if I have to pull a fuel tank out of a car or am worried about a gasoline spill....but I'm not concerned about using solvents or painting.

I had problems with hair salons and boilers. The chemicals in the air deteriorated the flame rods even on sealed combustion systems. Complete isolation is your best bet for the mechanical equipment.

I built a separate small closet for LP wall hung in a different room from my paint area and the manifold is on another wall central to the building to make the pex loops fairly equal.

Do you have any photos on how you did that? Your thread on your build has no photos

I sealed combustion boiler is probably as safe to run in your shop as anything else with a motor. Do you shut off your air compressor when painting?

I remember reading some scientific data on what it takes to have an explosion in a shop. What i got out of it is the fumes would have to be so thick you wouldn't want to be in the space.

Seriously, i would not concern myself about it. The chances of blowing yourself up are very low. I have painted cars and other equipment in my shop with an 80% furnace with open burners. Get some decent fans to ventilate and it will be fine.

I remember on a wood working group they were taking about shop explosions from dust. Someone posted information that showed the dust in the air would have to be thick, like a fog to be dangerous. Guys were concerned about shop heaters and dust. I used to do HVAC service and we maintained equipment at a commercial wood working shop and the unit heaters would have 2-3 inches of saw dust inside, all over. Shop vac them out, tune them up and go clean them out nest year!

The first post in my build thread has a link to the photo gallery. If you click on a picture in the album, it will show full size. That picture is the best one in the gallery though. It is just a closet built at the intersection of two walls. The back wall is the rear exterior wall of my building so the intake/exhaust flue pipe went out that. The last picture in my photo album shows the completed exterior view of the closet. If you look past all the junk, in the back is the wood closet door.
