How much do you have in your radiant heat. My garage is going to be 1600sq. ft. with two zones. I was quoted at about $6700 for everything installing it myshelf, scared the **** out of me.

was going to be too much for me, so I went propane forced air with a/c. The slab insulation was going to run $1500+and about the same for the tubing, then still needed the heat source (more $). Want a/c? well then that is another whole separate system. I really wanted radiant, but could not justify it.

Well, I can't give you the entire story, but my new 28 x 32 has the pex in the slab. Yes, I have 2" insulation at the bottom of the slab and that was costed in to the price of the job but I can't imagine it added $1500. It probably cost something like $500. The pex and the manifold and all the fittings to do the initial pressure test was something like another $600. I laid the pex myself with a stapler tool I rented from the tubing place. I have not purchased a boiler or any sort of heat source yet as I haven't gotten to the insulation yet. The garage was just completed and I'm doing extra wiring first. I agree that it's not dirt cheap but I figured I had only one shot to do it. I'm in MD and am thinking that a heat pump might be the cheapest approach to do heat and AC. But I have propane so, my ideal would be the boiler and a separate AC system but that is not cheap.

By the way, on the pressure test, sharkbite fittings are amazing. The system has stayed at a constant 30psia for over 2 months!!

Best thing to do is go to a warehouse and see how much the pex is there. When my uncle went to do his floor he was told just for the pex as he was doing it him self would be 5 grand. He went to a warehouse that sells infloor heating and walked out with all the peg and ends he needed for 3 grand.

If you're getting a "quote" from the online places that are selling $3000+ water heaters you are not going to be happy with the price of your radiant heating installation.
The PEX tubing should be costing you a bit over 50 cents/sq/ft.
2" insulation runs about 75 cents/sq/ft.

If you stay away from the convenient all in one preassembled heating units you can save 30% or more. Anyone with a bit of ability can piece together their own system by buying the components seperately. Check Grainger and McMaster-Carr, many of the componenets are available cheaper than from the radiant dealers.

It can be done, you just have to dump the "do it for me" attitude.

My slab is half the size of yours with one zone. Total price for equipment and Pex delivered was $1500. I laid the tube myself and wired the pump/thermostat/controller. I just fastened the Pex to the rebar in the slab with zipties.

Since I don't have gas in the garage I have an electric 7500W water heater. I had a plumber do the entire garage (bathroom/sink/house hookup) plus the radiant, so don't have a separate cost for that part. My setup is "open direct" do that the water heater supplies bathroom, shop sink, and eventual kitchen sink, as well as the floor.

They supplied me with 7/8" PEX, which I found hard to work with and having a tendency to kink. OTOH I needed only 3 loops. I think 5/8" would be easier to work with, even with more loops needed.

My materials from Radiantec for a '26 X '32 with one zone were $1300 shipped. Another $340 for a 30 gallon water heater. I would absolutely do it again.

My 32 x40 , two zones, five loop manifolds, everything including Seisco boiler, $2100.
Bought everything from Jupiter heating, here in Ohio.

Thats everything but the tie wraps to tie pipe to mesh in concrete. Includes the IPEX pipe with the aluminum liner, 1300ft. All labor myself.

Want to be scared, price the two inch Owens Corning foam for under slab insulation, that is the hardest check to wrrite.

I was going to put in fllor heat in my shop but my "buddy", who was a heating contractor at the time, gave me a price of $3500.00 (1994) for the parts... instead I saved my $$ and put in a $900.00 radiant tube heater.

Months later I found everything I needed to do the radiant floor heat deal for $1100.00... damn it.
