Has any one used a radiant tube heater? (one that hangs off the ceiling) What are the pro's and con's of this type heating system? Or is just better to use a hanging ceiling heater
like a hot dawg?

thanks,
al

I've got one here in my garage it's a 75K Sunray
I love it.
I do alot of work out of my garage (mechanic) and it's been fantastic
very quiet and cheap to run
I'm putting another one in a 32x40 detached that I am presently building and in that one I had the option of putting in floor heat and I decided against it

Hot dawg's ****. Do not buy one! I keep my garage 30 X 40 at 42 degrees all year. When I go out to work I raise it to 60. The shop heats in 15 minutes, The heat stays in when you open the doors. It's stored in the items in the shop. It's also quiet and dust free. The best system is radiant floor heat. However, you need to work out there every day to take advantage of it. It takes too long to heat up.

One of my concerns is the heating of objects. Is it so hot that it can blister the paint on a car or truck or anything else it its path?

Yes it can but that's why you follow the manufactures clearance specs. I wouldn't suggest an overhead tube heater if you have 8' ceilings as you'll likely burn your noggin' standing anywhere near it.

I found a Website called heatmygarage.com. It looks like it has a lot of information about heating garages, definitions of radiant vs convection heat, tube heaters, heater specs, etc.
You can order heaters from this site as well.

Mr. Heater is a Cleveland, Ohio based company that has been manufacturing overhead tube heaters for years. They have a call-in service help department too. You can buy their garage heaters from Northern Tool and www.heatmygarage.com. You can also get more info from www.mrheater.com

Fostoria seems to make a good line of radiant heaters. I'm planning on using one of theire Muli-T mount heaters in my build.
