I have not worked under them for long periods of time, but, it's like the sun shining.
When the "light" is hitting you it's like the midday sun beating on you, and when you are in the "shade" it's colder than being in the shade on a sunny day.
It's kinda hard to explain. The above is the best I can do.

Yes you need more height than that to make them work right. I had it in my last shop that had a 14' ceiling ht. and it worked great at 55 you where always warm. went with in floor heat in new shop.

There are some pics of the 20' / 50K BTU Sunstar radiant tube that I used in my garage (with scissor trusses), at the link in my sig below. It's up at about 11 feet off the floor, with the reflector angled toward the center of the space.

Mine worked FANTASTIC in my garage. I had an oversized 100kBTU unit that I set at 45*F during the winter and kicked it up to 55*F when I wanted to work. As long as you set it up high in the corner aimed at a 45, all should be well. Those that have shade issues or intense heat issues are likely not using them correctly.

You have to remember these heaters are meant to heat up the concrete and all objects in the shop...and as such, if used properly all shaded areas should be just as warm as the rest of the shop. The only time those areas will be somewhat cooler is when the heater is on and cranking out the heat...but at that point it should be only maintaining the room temperature and any shaded area should be only slightly cooler. Once the objects area heated up again, so are the shaded areas.

Also worth mentioning, I can work within several feet of my 100k BTU heater without harm. Sure, it get's a bit toasty...but it's not uncomfortable in the least bit.

Here is my setup (my ceilings are 10'6").

Many of them are designed for commercial use with high ceilings and would be too hot in a home garage, but there are some specifically designed for lower ceilings.

Mine tube is 40' long, hanging at 13' and in a lightly insulated 40'x40' pole barn, I can get it as warm as I want. I dont much heat it over 55 degress in the winter though, Im hot blooded and like it that way, I keep it at 55 in the shop all summer too, if I could afford it!

Mine was (industrial) and is by no means too hot for a home garage. As long as you maintain the proper clearance to combustibles you should be alright.

these might be worth looking at http://www.ceramicx.com/en/panel-heaters they do others too, I used to sell some of the other products in their range and they work very well.

The long wave IR dies not put out any visible light and have a life of 10k hrs. they could be turned on and off as needed to reduce bills and increase comfort.

I know they are available in 115 or 230!

I live in Michigan and put in a 40' Re-verber-Ray 100k 2stage unit and love it. I have a 36x48 shop and I mounted it along the back wall at a 45 and its worked out great. I keep the thermostat at 50 but you have to be careful where you put the stat since it cannot really be in the heat "path" or it will heat up very quickly. I got it from Detroit Radiant.
