I'm familair with the Ford radio removal tools that are two C pin tools where you insert them into the small holes and pull outward and remove the radio. But I've got this 2002 Ranger with an aftermarket radio and I'm not seeing where or how you remove this unit. Heres a couple of pics with and without the faceplate. Is there a different removal tool I need and where does it go?

I also have an '02 Ranger. The origional radio bolts in. You need to remove the bezel around the radio/ heating/ cooling cluster. See the 2 screws below the radio. Two hidden clips towards the top, gently pull outwards at the bottom after removing the screws.

The original radio does not bolt into a Ranger,it is removed with the standard Ford radio release keys.Rickster,if you head over to your local independant car stereo shop and ask if you could buy a set of release keys for a JVC they will probably give them to you.Just pop off the trim surrounding the radio and you will see indents in the side of the radio.Insert the key's in until they stop and then gently pull the radio out with the keys.Be patient as to let the radio come out easy,if you yank and tug it could potentially damage the harness.good luck, and if you can't find a set I will throw a set of JVC keys in the mail for you.

Thanks guys! I know this radio is a really great unit, but the multi color flashing digital display and tiny little buttons are a bit over the top for me. So I'm planning on replacing it with a stock unit. Looks like from the owner guide they came avalable with a single CD unit. Does anyone know if a newer Ford 6 CD unit will work?? Thanks again for the info guys.

A newer Ford unit will work as long as it has the same style plug.I would try to find a unit from a Ranger as you are guaranteed it will work. Most of the newest Ford cd players have gone to a different harness and bolt into the vehicle instead of the clip in method.

quick and easy solution... take an old credit card and cut strips just like the picture posted above... pop that gray trim ring around the radio off and slide them in the sides, vertically, 1 on each side, in the middle of each end.

or honestly, if you dont care about the unit thats in there/the jvc radio.., grab the pocket and yank. its more than likely just pressure fit in there.

lastly, you could take the 2 7mm bolts that hold the black dashpiece that surrounds the radio and ac controls out. then just pop the entire trim piece out. the radio/kit pocket should come out with it. quite easy. 30 seconds
