I was trying to find any information on this vise. Appears that this web sight is about it. Vise is in really good shape physically. Kind of wondering about the age and what was the original color. I thought about restoring. RAE107_2.jpg

Congratulations on being the owner of a pretty rare Rae vise, a 107 with 7" wide jaws and from Rae's heavy-duty commercial line-up to boot. This was the largest vise size that they manufactured and examples of it are almost never seen anymore.

With regard to original paint colour, take a look at this posting from Garage Jounal's main vise thread, where I posted a couple of my Rae vises in their original paint. I would call it a blue-gray colour.

As far as its age, I would estimate probably in the 1960's to early 1970's. It is later than the 1950's since it does not have the rounded "meatball" handle hub that the Rae's had back then. Here is a catalog page from 1979 which is pretty much the last year or so that Rae was still in business. I think yours is older than what is shown here, since yours appears to have a lip on the front edge of the base that wraps around the edge of the bench. This feature is an older style compared to the catalog image which just shows a completely flat base.

Regards, Tom

Nice vise, looks to be in great shape.

If you don't mind weighing it, that will narrow down the date. If it's about 110 lbs, the spec for the 107 in the catalog page Tom posted above, then its likely from about 1967 on - that's the first year I have evidence of a vise made with Ductalloy. It will also have a maximum opening of 9", measured with the end of slide even with the back of the static jaw.

If it's around 210 lbs, and the max opening is 12" (per the 1950 catalog page below, when Rae was still made in Hamilton), then it's not Ductalloy, and would be from about 1965 to 1967 or so. 1965 is the last year I've found a directory listing Rae vises being made by McCoy Foundry, and the first year for an OTACO listing with Rae vises. Since directory listings aren't always updated, and OTACO may have introduced Ductalloy versions of some models before others, these dates aren't exact.

If you do measure and weigh it, please post the results - they'd be helpful!
