I bought a vise today on a whim. Its Rae No. 6 made in hamilton. there are a few problems off the bat with it.. its missing the jaw plates (teeth?). but came with a set of 5 inch ones. There is also 2 screws broken off inside the jaws. It looks like someone may have tried to weld the screws to remove them? is it possible to get those screws out. ? I was tryin to source some jaw teeth and i came to a site with a set for ~150 dollars.. does that sound rite? just for the teeth plates?

Here is a link to an album. you can see a big chunk broke off under the jaw on the made base . it seems like it shouldnt affect it too much. but maybe im wrong.

Assume your concern is that screw stub above the breakout? I'd make a drill guide (1 X 3/8" bar) and use the good hole to anchor/align it. Start with a center drill, then use a LH drill and see what you can do. Clean out the existing threads with a tap.

If it is just for casual use, I'd just make up a set of jaws from more of your 1 X 3/8" bar stock, and not invest big bucks in new jaws. Make up a piece to fit that break and weld it in, or braze it if better for you.

Hope you didn't pay anything for that vise.

i paid 45 bucks it :( , i guess thats all part of learning. Im having a machinist make up new jaws and thread new holes. he was gonna try to get the screws out but said it would be tough. so he would probably make new holes.. he said it would cost me about 50 bucks. so ill be into it around 100 bucks after a can of paint.. you win some and you lose some i guess.
